Happy Groundhog Day!

Well it’s official, Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow…

According to German folklore, if a hibernating animal casts a shadow on February 2, the Christian holiday for Candlemas, winter will last another 6 weeks, and that’s exactly what happened this morning in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania at approximately 7:30am.   Every February 2, people gather at Gobbler’s Knob, a wooded knoll just outside of Punxsutawney (btw – Punxsutawney is located in Western Pennsylvania, about 80 miles northeast of Pittsburgh), to witness Phil, the groundhog, emerge from its burrow to predict the weather.

I just love the whole idea of this “holiday”.  I’ve always known about Groundhog Day, but never really thought that much about it.  Well that’s not the case in Pennsylvania!  I had no idea that cowds as high as 40,000 people have been gathering together to celebrate Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney since 1886.  And this year they have even more reason to celebrate with the Pittsburgh Steelers winning Superbowl 43 last night in Tampa.

Here are some more fun facts about Phil the infamous Groundhog:

  • His full name is actually “Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators and Weather Prophet Extraordinary”.
  • For most of the year, Phil lives in a climate-controlled home at the Punxsutawney Library.  He is taken to Gobbler’s Knob and placed in a heated burrow underneath a simulated tree stump on stage before being pulled out to make his prediction.
  • Phil is reported to be more than 100 years old.
  • His wife’s name is Phyllis.

Snow, Snow Go Away…

We’ve had a pretty mild winter so far here in Kentucky, so when the weather man said to plan for snow today, I didn’t think much about it.  Imagine my surprise when I woke up to eight inches of snow covering the ground!  I know that’s probably nothing for some people that live up north, but that’s a lot here in my neck of the woods.  Unfortunately it’s not over either.  The freezing rain is starting up and by tomorrow morning we’re to have another 2-4 inches of snow on top of all that lovely ice!  Like most people I can handle the snow it’s the freezing rain on the roads that I hate!  When is Spring supposed to be here??

Unlike adults, children love the snow – the more the better!  More snow means no school and that in itself is a min vacation for them.  My teen-aged nephew, Taylor (being the little entrepreneur he is) probably loves snow more than anyone I know.  Last week he put this big snow plow on the front of his quad-runner with the anticipation of our first big snowfall.  They live right down the street so first thing this morning he drives down, picks up my son Caden and off they went to plow driveways.  Caden is the front walk snow shoveler.  While Taylor is plowing the driveways, he shovels the walk ways.  Then at the end of the day, they split the money they make so it’s a win win for everybody.  As Taylor always says, “Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow…”, but me I’m more the “Snow, snow go away…and don’t ever come back”!  I should probably move to Florida!

However, a great way to warm up your significant other this winter is by wearing a nice little number from HalloweenExpress.com this February 14th.  You’ll have no trouble finding love in a Valentine’s Day Cupid costume

And don’t forget Mardi Gras is February 24th followed by Read Across America with Dr. Seuss on March 2nd and last but certainly not least the biggest Irish party of the year, St Patrick’s Day on March 17th!

Are You Ready For Some Football?

Superbowl 43 will be played in Tampa Bay on Sunday, February 1, 2009.  That’s only 12 days away!  The Pittsburgh Steelers, who have been in six previous Superbowl games, will play the Arizona Cardinals who will be making their first appearance on the big stage.

All around the U.S. men, women and children are getting ready for the big game!  Parties are being planned, tickets are being bought and sports bars are getting ready for the crowds.  We’ve always been a big football family and love watching the Superbowl every year.  However, I would enjoy it even more if my favorite team the Cincinnati Bengals were in it, but hey there’s always next year.

This year we’re going to a Superbowl party at a friend’s house.  It’s an annual party for them and every year they do a different theme.  This year I’m so excited because it’s a “costume” theme party.  And you know me, I can always find a great costume

My husband and I have decided to go as referee’s.  His costume is your typical referee costume with black pants and a black/white shirt, however mine is a little bit should we say, sexier than that.  As you know HalloweenExpress.com has some great women’s referee costumes that would definitely make the football players have a little trouble concentrating on the game.  I’ve decided to go with the 3 pc sexy referee costume for my part.  But since it’s a family party I’ll be wearing a pair of my sons cleats instead of the spiked heals.

My son Caden will be wearing the Sports Warrior costume making him seem like a zombie football player and both my daughters are going as cheerleaders.  Olivia wants to wear the Disney Princess Cheerleader costume and Sydney will wear the High School Musical Cheerleading costume.  She thought it was more important to represent East High than the two teams that are actually playing in the Superbowl!

If you decide to throw a costumed theme party for Superbowl 43 this year, be sure to check out all the great costumes at HalloweenExpress.com.

I Do Solemnly Swear…

Next week on January 20, 2009, President-elect Barack Obama will be sworn-in as the 44th President of the United States.  The first President to ever do this was of course President George Washington on April 30, 1789.  What I think is really interesting is that the ceremonial traditions that were established by George Washington at his first presidential inauguration have been followed into present day, such as;

  • using a Bible when taking the oath of office
  • reading an inaugural address
  • attending an inaugural ball

Attending the 2009 Inauguration is a hot ticket by any means.  Hotels around the Washington D.C. area have been booked to capacity for months now.  A lot of people will be throwing parties and celebrating this historic event with their family and friends.

If you’re thinking about having an “Inauguration 2009″ party, HalloweenExpress.com is the perfect place to get all your Presidential party needs!  With the help of some of their great presidential costumes and masks, you can actually have President-elect Barack Obama at your party along with Bill and Hillary Clinton.  How cool would it be to have President’s George Washington and Abraham Lincoln there as well, not only in spirit but with the help of an amazing mask from HalloweenExpress.com they can be there in person as well!

This will be one Inauguration party that your friends will be talking about for years to come!

Join Dr. Seuss for “Read Across America”!

Each year The National Education Association sponsors “Read Across America” to promote the importance of reading in children.  What better day to celebrate it on than the birthday of the most beloved children’s author, Dr. Seuss!  This special occasion calls for every child in every community to celebrate their love of reading!

This year schools, librarys and centers across the nation will be celebrating “Read Across America” on Monday, March 2nd.  Theodore Seuss Geisel knew how important it was to motivate children to read.  His first children’s book was published in 1937 called “And To Think I Saw It On Mulberry Street”.  Since then he has written and illustrated 44 children’s books including such all-time favorites as; Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat In The Hat, Horton Hears a Who and The Grinch Who Stole Christmas just to name a few.  Over 200 million copies of Dr. Seuss books have found their way into the hearts and homes of people around the world.

I grew up reading Dr. Seuss books and reading them to my children brings back great memories.  My kids love Read Across America because we go to our local library where everyone is wearing a big red and white striped Cat in the Hat hat!  The children all sit around on mats and listen while the adult volunteers read Dr. Seuss!  The kids love it!

What better way to show children the fun of reading Dr. Seuss than by actually putting on a costume and becoming the Cat In The Hat, Horton Hears a Who or The Grinch?  Adults and children alike can get into the fun by wearing one of these great costumes.  There you’ll find everything you need to make your “Read Across America” the best reading experience for your child.

So this year on March 2nd, put on a Cat In The Hat costume and read!
