Friday the 13th – Do You Have “Paraskavedekatriaphobia”?

Friday the 13th – feeling lucky today?  Did you know that today is the only Friday of the whole year that the thirteenth falls on.  If you’re superstitious then you’re probably on full-alert today!  Here is a little “fyi” for you; the fear of Friday the 13th is called “paraskavedekatriaphobia”, a specialized form of triskaidekaphobia, which is a fear of the number thirteen.

The dictionary defines the word superstition as, “an irrational fear of what is unknown or mysterious”.  Although it may be defined as irrational, I’m sure many people would disagree.  Some sources say that Friday the 13th may be the most widespread superstition in the United States.  Many people avoid travel, avoid signing contracts, some won’t go to work or eat in restaurants and some people won’t even get out of bed.  And it’s not just people that are superstitious, the business world is  as well.  Many tall buildings don’t have a 13th floor and some airlines don’t have a row 13, they skip straight from 12 to 14.   Many Christians have long believed that Friday was unlucky because it was the day of the week when Jesus was crusified and the number 13 was believed to bring bad luck because there were 13 people at The Last Supper with the 13th guest being Judas, the traitor.

Besides the more popular superstitions you hear everyday such as; walking under a ladder, breaking a mirror and opening an umbrella indoors - here are some bad luck superstitions that I had never heard of:

  • a bat flying into your house
  • three butterflies together
  • hearing a rooster crow at night
  • spilling salt
  • crossing knives at a table
  • sitting on a table without one foot touching the ground
  • breaking a glass while proposing a toast
  • seeing an owl during daylight hours

I think everyone has seen the character “Jason” from the slasher films Friday the 13th out trick-or-treating on Halloween night.  Every year I see at least one, if not more Jason’s running around in our neighborhood wearing the trademark white hockey mask.  This popular horror film franchise has been around since the original movie came out in May 1980.  Since then 11 sequels have been released with the latest being “Jason vs Freddy” in 2003.  However, there’s great news if you’re a Friday the 13th movie fan!  A remake of the original Friday the 13th film is scheduled for release Friday, February 13, 2009.

Horsin’ Around

Wow did you see the Belmont Stakes Saturday on TV?  I felt so sorry for the horse Big Brown, he just didn’t look like himself.  All the hype about him, his jockey and his trainer had me really pulling for him.  Since he was the favorite I thought for sure we were going to see a Triple Crown Winner in the making, but unfortunately that wasn’t to be.  I’m sure there were a lot of “betters” out there that put their money on Big Brown only to be disappointed (that’s probably putting it mildly). Anyway, if Big Brown is healthy the plan is to race him next in the Travers Stakes on August 23 at Saratoga.  It will be interesting to see how he does.

The other day I took my kids to lunch at Cracker Barrel.   Although they love eating there, what’s even better for them is the general store that you so conveniently have to walk through to get to the restaurant.  Since we had a few minutes to wait for our table, I let them each pick out a toy or game.  My five year old daughter fell in love with the “stick horse”.  Do you remember those?  It’s a stuffed horses head on the end of a long stick with an on/off button that makes neighing and galloping sound affects.  I hadn’t seen one of those in years!  She had been watching the horse races with my husband all day on Saturday and is now more intrigued than ever with anything that has to do with horses.  So when she saw that “stick horse” there was no turning back – she had her one toy.

I know horse racing can be a very serious sport, but next time you’re planning a trip to the race track and want to add a little light-hearted humor, wear one of our horse costumes from Halloween Express.  If I would have seen one of these costumes walking around in the crowd at the Belmont Stakes it would have definitely put a smile on my face!  Check out these costumes:

  • Headless Horseman Costume
  • Full Body Horse Mascot Costume
  • Hung Like a Horse

Believe me you’ll be the talk of the track!

Aloha High School Seniors!

Well, we’re officially into the month of May.  Hopefully the old saying, “April showers brings May flowers” is true because I’m sick of the rain and ready to get outside and start getting my yard ready for summer.

May is always a very important month for a lot of high school seniors out there getting ready for graduation! Senioritis is kicking in and I’m pretty sure they’re ready to move on.  Their four long hard years of high school are finally coming to an end (little do they know that compared to the “real” world, those last four years were a piece of cake)!

The big thing on their mind right now is, “where are all the graduation party’s going to be”?  If you’re thinking about throwing the ultimate graduation party for your son or daughter then the “Hawaiian Luau” theme is just what you’re looking for!  Of course no tropical party would be complete without Hawaiian costumes and at Halloween Express you’ll find every style of costume with that tropical flare.  No Luau would be complete without the grass hula skirt and coconut bra!  You can play games and have a hula hoop and/or limbo contest.  It’s so much fun and the kids will love it!

Check out all our Hawaiian Luau costumes and accessories we have to offer at Halloween Express!

Joust In Time For the Renaissance Festival!

If you’ve never been to a Renaissance Festival then you should definitely make 2008 your year to go!  As they say, it’s like 400 years of fun in a single day!  This year the 19th annual Ohio Renaissance Festival runs from August 30th thru October 19th.  What better way to spend a nice fall day than to be entertained by valient knights or swindling pirates?  The “Open-air Marketplace” is amazing with all the arts and crafts from a time long, long ago.  It’s always fun to do a little 16th century shopping with 21st century plastic!

By today’s standards it’s almost impossible to find a place to go as a family where everyone can have fun and enjoy themselves no matter what their age.  The Renaissance festival is one such place!  Furthermore, they encourage visitors to enter into the spirit of things with costumes and audience participation.  What better way to do this than by wearing one of our Renaissance costumes when you go.  We have them in all sizes for men, women and children.  So grab a costume and step back to a historic time of jousting, Robin Hood and Queen Elizabeth I.  You’ll be glad you did!

Summer Blockbuster Movies

If your children are like mine, they base their Halloween costume on whatever character catches their fancy over the summer.  Last year a few of them were Hannah Montana, The Simpsons, Shrek the Third, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean and Spider Man 3.  As we all know, huge trends for Halloween costumes are geared toward characters from movies that are released over the summer.  Here are just a few of the big summer blockbuster movies being released this year that will definitely be huge costume sellers at Halloween Express over the coming months:

Iron Man – “Heroes Aren’t Born – They’re Made”

Speed Racer – “Go, Speed Racer, Go”

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian – “A New Age Has Begun”

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – “The Adventure Continues”

Kung Fu Panda – “Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting”

Hellboy II: The Golden Army – “Humanity’s Only Hope”

The Dark Knight – “Gotham Needs You”

Horton Hears a Who – “One Elephant, One World, One Story”

The Incredible Hulk – “Our Only Hope is Something Incredible”
