YAY February!

There’s something about the arrival of February that’s like a breath of fresh air.  To me, January seems so long and never-ending.  February on the other hand, is a shorter month filled to the brim with all sorts of good things.  The even better news is, that when February ends (and it will rather quickly), it always feels like spring is just around the corner.  So without further a-do, <drum roll, please> Happy February!  To celebrate, here’s a great list of fabulous things February brings!

Holiday’s in Abundance!  Okay, maybe these aren’t huge holidays like Christmas or (our personal favorite) Halloween, but in my book, a holiday is a holiday and February is packed with some really good ones.  Groundhog’s Day, Valentine’s Day, President’s Day and Mardi Gras are some of the more readily recognized holidays or celebrations we can get excited about during February.  But listen, folks…there are LOTS more.  Check out this list of things to look forward to this month.  And you thought it was just more winter!

Celebrate All Month Long!  You just won’t believe all the month-long celebrations happening in such a short and sweet month.  February honors and marks the following:  Black History Month, American Heart Month, and American History Month.  A few of the less known month-long celebrations include: Responsible Pet Owner Month, Embroidery Month and Bird Feeding Month.  (Nothing spells party like a full bird feeder, right?)

Big Bird and The Joker – Who’da Thunk It?

Big Bird Costumes are Popular

You really can’t make this stuff up.  Sometimes in the course of life, something a little bit crazy happens that sets the world a-giggling and making fun.  Even the most serious events, like the upcoming Presidential elections have put some interesting (and very unforeseen) characters straight into the limelight.

A few weeks ago, Big Bird was happily living a quiet and peaceful existence down on Sesame Street, when all of sudden he was thrust into the nation’s headlines through a casual reference to him by Mitt Romney during one of the Presidential debates.  Chatter about Big Bird is now all over the Internet and headlining in the media.  Big Bird is starring in memes, is in headlines everywhere and Big Bird costumes (just in time for Halloween) are literally flying off the shelves. Big Bird’s presence also has been requested on “Good Morning America” as well as the “Today” show, not to mention several of the late night talk shows. (Big Bird has respectfully declined all offers thus far.)  Who in the world ever saw this coming?  It certainly gives new meaning to the song lyrics, “Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street?”  Now all anyone wants to know is how to get Big Bird!

Recently, it appears that the left side is getting some costume character comparisons of their own.  After the Vice Presidential debate had concluded, Twitter and other social media sites were abuzz with commentary on Joe Biden’s steady stream of bizarre grinning and smirking during the entire debate, some calling his demeanor more akin to “The Joker” than anything close to what is expected of a Vice President.

Halloween costume masks designed in the likeness of the presidential candidates themselves are also an obvious popular choice this Halloween season.  Can Halloween mask sales predict which candidate is more popular with the masses?  Some sites say they can and others swear that they can predict the election winner based on Halloween mask sales alone.

No matter what your personal politics are, Halloween falling right before the Presidential election makes it the perfect time to parlay your political agenda into a night of All American, tongue-in-cheek costume fun. Whether you sport a Big Bird suit, a Joker costume or go with a much more obvious choice with one of our life-like political masks, these costumes are going to be the talk of your Halloween party and create a lot of laughs for you and your friends, while at the same time hopefully inspiring them to get out and vote!

Snow White – Why We Can’t Seem To Get Enough of Her

Snow White and the Huntsman

“Snow White and the Huntsman” came roaring into theatres this past weekend.  This somewhat modernized version of the epic story of Snow White is yet another adaptation of this legendary fairy tale from long ago.  What is it about Snow White and her crazy life that apparently has stood the test of time?  Why do we care anymore about these ancient fairy stories?  Do they even relate to our modern day living?  Here’s our list of the top 5 reasons why we still love Snow White:

Snow White is the Eternal Optimist.  There’s nothing worse than hanging out with someone who is always moaning and groaning about everything; but you won’t see any of that nonsense with this girl.  Even during some of the direst circumstances, good ol’ Snow is keeping her chin up and her attitude positive.  That’s impressive.  Snow White continues to look forward to a brighter day and of course, is hope driven by her desire to find true love.

Snow White is Always Cheerful. Okay, perhaps it might get mildly annoying at times to be around someone this happy, but there is something to be said for someone who can keep smiling when their life is absolutely exploding.  During the most tedious and mundane chores, Snow White found the wherewithal to sing catchy little tunes about whistling while you work.  (It’s in your head now, isn’t it?)  If attitude is everything, Snow White wins, hands down.

Snow White is Humble.  Even though Snow White technically is royalty, she seems to be completely fine with the fact that she was forced to wear ratty clothes and work like a slave. (She did however, still look smokin’ hot in her ragged duds–take that, you evil Stepmother!) When the dwarves find Snow White deep in the forest, she doesn’t find cleaning up after the little guys beneath her either; she just dives right in and gets the job done.  No diva attitude for Snow White, princess or not, she behaves like a pretty average, hardworking girl.

Snow White is Kind.  They say you catch a lot more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.  Snow White truly must use this philosophy as her mantra, and in the fairytale we know and love, this quality of hers likely saved her life on more than one occasion. The Huntsman, who leaves her in the forest, was likely so taken with her beauty and sweetness that he couldn’t follow through with the evil bidding of the queen.  When they happen upon Snow White, the seven dwarves are also very taken by her completely sweet demeanor and instantly all are enamored with her as well, swearing to take care of her at all costs.

Snow White doesn’t Give Up.  Let’s face it.  Snow White came up against some pretty fierce obstacles, from attempts on her life, to having to survive after being ditched in the middle of forest-nowhere.  Snow White teaches us that it really doesn’t matter how many times you get knocked down in life, the important part is getting back up, brushing yourself off and persevering until eventually things turn around for you.  You gotta hand it to this chick.  For someone who seems so docile, sweet and innocent, she’s really got some bravado. For the latest metamorphosis on her character check out “Snow White and The Huntsman.”  In theatres now.

INFOGRAPHIC: Snow White vs. The Evil Queen. Who is the Fairest of Them All?

In case you haven’t heard, today the movie ‘Snow White and the Huntsman‘ was released. The movie has a star studded cast including Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron. While the reviews are just now starting to come in, the special effects, production design and Snow White and the Huntsman costumes are said to be outstanding. Whether you see the movie or not most everyone knows the story of Snow White. And according to the mirror in this fairytale, there is only one woman in all the land who is more beautiful than Queen Ravenna – SNOW WHITE. Believing herself to be the rightful most ‘fair’, Queen Ravenna orders Snow White to be killed in the ultimate tale of vengeance. We thought it would be fun to take a look at these two iconic women in this fairytale. Does the mirror speak the truth? Who really is the fairest? You be the judge. Let’s take a look.

5 Facts You Need to Know About Memorial Day

Memorial Day is the official kick off to summer and is something we all look forward to.  Memorial day is part of a delicious 3-day weekend, traditionally filled with family fun, picnics and barbeques, or maybe even a trip to the beach.  It’s definitely time to fill up those swimming pools, pull out the summer wardrobe and dust off the patio furniture, but there really is a whole lot more to Memorial Day than just 3 fun-filled days. Here’s our top 5 list of facts that you really should know about this holiday that besides being lots of fun, should also be filled with both honor and reverence.

  1. Memorial Day started right after the Civil War.  The origins of this holiday go way back.  May 30, 1868 was designated to be what was at first called “Decoration Day”.  This event was designed especially to honor the memory of the many, many fallen soldiers of both the Union and the Confederacy, while also giving survivors an opportunity to decorate the graves of these brave soldiers.  General James Garfield gave a speech at Arlington National Cemetery after which the graves of more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers were then decorated.
  2. “Decoration Day” was declared a time of remembrance and became a time for the nation to remember the war dead and to decorate the graves of these fallen soldiers.  Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30.  This day was chosen largely because of the profusion of flowers that would be in bloom at this time of the year.
  3. Red Poppies became associated with Memorial Day in about 1915.  A woman named Moina Michael was so inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields” that she composed a poem of her own:
  4. “We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.”

Moina came up with the idea to wear red poppies on Memorial Day as a way of honoring those that died serving their country, a tradition that still continues to this day.

  5. Traditional Memorial Day observance states that flags should be flown at half-mast until noon.  At mid-day it is then appropriate to raise the flag to the top of the mast.
  6. Memorial Day is as much about the survivors as it is about the deceased.  It’s the survivors that can make sure that the memory of our fallen soldiers lives on and that the stories of their ultimate bravery are told.  Survivors can continue to tell the tales of our war heroes and perpetuate the ideals that they believed in and ultimately gave their lives for.

Have a safe and wonderful Memorial Day!

“For love of country they accepted death.”  James A. Garfield
