It was not exactly a normal weekend in San Diego. Walking past twin Superman’s and a Storm Trooper in the Gaslight District may be assumed to be no big deal in California unless you actually live here. Isn’t this just an every day occurrence on an average day in the Golden State? This is, after all, Southern California, not too far south of Hollywood where new realities are dreamed up on a daily basis. San Diego is even closer to Disneyland which on this weekend might have actually only been the second happiest place on earth. In spite of what the average Joe may assume about California, even the locals were taken aback by what was lurking on nearly every street corner during the past 4 days. When Comic-Con comes to town, along with it’s kaleidoscope of colorful merchandise, characters, and events, it’s time to batten down the hatches, folks. There’s some serious fun to be had; let the geek-fest begin!

From the outside, it looks as though Halloween came really early. More Comic-Con attendee’s were dressed up than ever before and some of the get ups were pretty elaborate, likely taking hours to makeup and assemble. Now considered the perfect excuse to dress up as pretty much any character you like, Comic-Con had its humble beginnings back in 1970 as an annual fan convention that catered mostly to Comic Book fans. Comic Con now has morphed into a multi-genre, multi-faceted 4-day giant event that although still has roots in comics, has branched out to include many more areas of focus such as science fiction, fantasy, film, television, horror, animation, anime, manga, toys, collectibles, video games–well, almost anything goes at Comic Con.

Many upcoming big movies were being promoted at Comic Con this year, such as “The Expendables 2”, “The Hobbit”, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2”, as well as an exciting sneak peak at the upcoming “Iron Man 3”. Many more television shows were being featured, such as “Game of Thrones”, “The Walking Dead,” and “The Big Bang Theory”. Just about every movie and tv themed costume character were there. A couple of hot new shows coming out in the future were also being touted. “Revolution”, a futuristic dramatic sci fi show will be out on NBC this fall, and a video game based sci fi thriller, “Defiance”, is set to come out sometime next year.

Even if you were unable to score tickets to attend the convention itself, there was still plenty of action all around town for those who were looking for a good time. Rob Zombie held an event called “Dawn of the Con” at the local Petco Park where attendees could be seen trying to avoid and dodge attacking Zombies. Some of the bigger gaming companies had areas set up where gamer geeks could unite and find a space to get their game on. Disney and HGTV set up a large electric garden, a huge promotional turn-on featuring the new movie “Frankenweenie”, which will be released in early October. DC Comics had a local art show featuring both superheroes and super villains. MAC cosmetics were nearby promoting their “Archie” cosmetics line. Comic Con isn’t just for comic book fans, any more folks.

Whether you are looking for collectibles, new toys, movies, games, memorabilia, comics or perhaps just want an excuse to dress up as something completely crazy, Comic Con offers a forum for all sorts of artistic expression or you could even call it a giant get-together for geeks and nerds everywhere. This is one of those times however, where it is indeed, quite hip to be square. If you are a bit of a nerd at heart, it’s perfectly all right to come to Comic Con and just be yourself. Nerdery is fully embraced here. And if you are still wondering what you should wear, well–if you can dream it–be it. Trust us, you’ll fit right in.

“The Dark Knight Rises” – What You Need To Know

The Dark Knight Rises

Drum roll please.  You’ve likely been waiting for the release of The Dark Knight Rises for a long time.  It’s been eight years since the last installment with Bruce Wayne and crew; the latest and purportedly final chapter in the Batman trilogy will roar like a Batpod into theatres July 20, 2012.  The Dark Knight Rises promises to bring Batman out of his self-imposed reclusion with a theme of redemption.  Still dealing with his own personal issues from his childhood, Bruce Wayne must now face some of the pain he still feels from his early days, as well as the blame he feels for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent.  Director Christopher Nolan has stated that this Batman adventure film will end, rather than expand on the series, so expect to have many of the loose ends left open in prior films to finally be tied up, and other questions left hanging, finally answered.

Who’s Back/Who’s Not/Who’s New!  Returning to reprise their roles from prior Batman flicks are veterans Christian Bale as the Caped Crusader himself, Michael Caine as Alfred, Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox.  Nestor Carbonell will also be replaying the role of the Mayor Anthony Garcia.  The character of Robin will not be brought back as Christian Bale was noted to say he would refuse to replay his role as Bruce Wayne if his Boy Wonder sidekick were around to steal part of his dark thunder.  New players being added to the final Batman chapter are: Tom Hardy as the villain Bane, along with Anne Hathaway now purring her way around as the new version of Catwoman.  Marion Cotillard will be playing the somewhat mysterious role of Miranda Tate and if you listen to the pre-movie rumor mill, you might be suspect that there is a secret identity involved in her character.

Rumor Has It!  Lots of rumors circle around the release of any big blockbuster film; The Dark Knight Rises is no exception.  Although we can’t confirm or deny any of the scuttlebutt, things to consider as you count down the days until Friday are:  Is Batman up for the task of tackling the new villain Bane–or has Batman finally met his match?  Who is this Bane–and more importantly, is he working for someone else? If so who? Is it possible that the League of Shadows is involved or even Ra’s al Ghul? Plus … we hear there’s some awesome new Batman costumes too!

What We Do Know!  There is a lot of secrecy revolving around the plot of The Dark Knight Rises.  Apparently there was no written screenplay and the actors were just verbally given their lines while on set so that nothing would leak out!  The anticipation is killing us of course, but there are a few things that we do know for sure. Out of respect for Heath Ledger, there will be no mention or references to The Joker whatsoever in this film.  Bane, the new terrorist-like, classic movie monster aka villain, has a clear-cut, evil mission.  The Catwoman’s role (friend or foe?) is unclear.  Bruce Wayne may have some vulnerability that is at issue and Bane will ultimately challenge Batman clearly both physically and mentally. In some of the previews, Bruce Wayne is seen walking with a cane, and we also see Bane once looming over the Dark Knight, inviting as well as inciting him to die.

You will not want to miss this epic superhero thriller that is very likely to make history.  Run, don’t walk to a theatre near you, July 20, 2012.

“There’s a storm coming, Mr. Wayne.  You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you’re all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.”  Selena Kyle

Star-Spangled July 4th Random Facts

Star-Spangled July 4th Random Facts

The most All-American celebration of the year is here!  It’s time to pull out all your red, white and blue and revel in your patriotism while celebrating Independence Day with your friends and family.  Whether you are enjoying a parade, a picnic, a BBQ, a beach day, or any number of exciting 4th of July activities, you will want to show the love for your country in style.  Here are some random and interesting factoids that may make your 4th a little more interesting while giving you some fodder for conversation this holiday.

Did You Say Turkey?  Benjamin Franklin had many great ideas but perhaps this wasn’t one of them.  Did you know that ol’ Ben wanted the national bird to be the turkey?  We’re kind of glad he got outvoted on this one.

Population Explosion:  Back in 1776, there were approximately 2.5 million Americans in the entire United States.  Today there are well over 300 million Americans!

Fireworks:  Most of the fireworks used during Fourth of July celebrations are imported from China.  Approximately 200 million dollars worth of fireworks will be imported from China this year along with 3.5 million dollars worth of American Flags.

Speaking of Flags:  Surprisingly the number one consumer of manufactured American Flags is Mexico.

Hot Dog!  American’s on the Fourth of July will consume over 150 million hot dogs.

Delayed Reaction:  July 4th did not become a national holiday until 1870.

The Stars Have It:  The stars on the original American flag were placed in a circle to symbolize the original colonies, all which were considered to be equal to one another.  Obviously that design was eventually outgrown!

Parrrrty!  The first official Fourth of July party was appropriately held at the White House back in 1801.

Let Freedom Ring:  Congress actually voted for Independence on July the 2nd but because the document known as the Declaration of Independence wasn’t completed until July 4th, the printing date of the document stated July 4th.  This date obviously stuck even though it was just the print date.

Legal Eagle:  It is a felony to kill a bald eagle.  Don’t mess with their nests or eggs, either.

What took so long?  The original Founding Fathers didn’t actually sign the Declaration of Independence until August 2, 1776.

That’s A Little Weird:  Did you know that 2 American President’s have died on July 4th?  Both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams said their final adieu on the most patriotic day of the year, July 4th.  Very fitting.

5 Reasons Why We LOVE Spiderman

5 Reasons Why We LOVE Spiderman!

Are you ready for the next wave of superhero madness to hit the theatres?  The Fourth of July is right around the corner and along with the most patriotic holiday of the year, our buddy Spidey is set to hit the silver screen once again.  A newly cast Peter Parker and a brand new and exciting storyline has Spiderman up against an all-new nemesis. What is it about this web-spewing dude that has captured our hearts?  Why is Spiderman still one of America’s all-time favorite superheroes? Here’s our top 5 list of why we absolutely are crazy about Spiderman!

He’s Just an Average Guy:  He’s no playboy living in a mansion.  Peter Parker, after all, was once just an average teenager living a slightly abysmal existence filled with typical teenage angst and self-doubt, not to mention insecurity.  When Peter Parker becomes Spiderman, he is suddenly morphed into every teenager’s fantasy!  As Spiderman, this once shy teen becomes powerful, strong and more popular than literally anybody else!  Anyone who has lived through his or her teenage years can relate to Peter on some level.

He’s Got Cool Powers:  What’s not to love about a guy that can shoot webs and then use them to swing through the streets of New York City?  Everyone knows that Spiderman has a superhero level of strength, agility and reflexes.  Spidey also has the ability to cling to most any surface that enables him to do really cool stuff like scale up walls.  Spiderman also enjoys what is affectionately known as Spider-sense, which is sort of a pre-cognitive ability to sense imminent danger.

Still Making Silly Wisecracks:  Spiderman is still in touch with his sense of humor, and is notorious for his sarcastic one-liners even while he stands directly in the face of danger.  Talk about comic relief, this endearing and funny quality of Spiderman’s has helped him keep a cool head while he goes about his biz fighting off some pretty nasty villains.

Love A Hot Guy in Uniform:  Okay, we know it’s not a uniform in the traditional sense, but still, Spidey’s get-up is seriously cool.  His traditional spandex Spiderman costume is blue on the bottom, red on the top with a nifty spider pattern imprinted on it.  Spiderman’s form-fitting gear shows off his male physique to perfection, from his one-way mirror mask all the way down to the tips of his badass boots.

He Knows Who He Is:  Spidey still remembers his roots.  Forever loyal to the people that matter in his life, like Aunt May and Mary Jane Watson, Spiderman has never gotten too big for his britches.  He is not too important for domestic duties like washing dishes and when it came to proposing marriage, he clearly was still in touch with his romantic side, showing how much he loves his girlfriend.  Spiderman also continues to prove that he takes his superhero gifts seriously and is most noted for his infamous quote, “With great power comes great responsibility”.

The Amazing Spider-man is set to hit theatres July 3rd.

Top 10 Favorite Boys of Summer Movies

Top 10 Favorite Boys of Summer Movies

The Dad and Grad celebrations are over.  As the weather turns balmy, now our thoughts can turn to some of the other boys we have on our minds!  This summer there are some pretty amazing male characters that are worth getting to know, and they are easily found inside a movie theatre near you!  We’ve compiled a list of our top 10 favorite boys of summer that are absolutely going to put some extra sizzle into your long and heat-filled days.  These exciting characters (and the movies they hail from) should definitely be made part of your hot weather fun!

The Avengers:  These comic book boys are rapidly heating up theatres everywhere at turbo speed.  With a cast of superheroes like Thor, The Hulk, Captain America, The Black Widow, Iron Man, Hawkeye, and Nick Fury; you surely have a perfect recipe for action packed excitement as well as fun. Plus, the costumes these guys are wearing are going to be some of the all time favorites we’ll see this coming Halloween season. But for now,  everybody is talking about this film and with good reason; you don’t want to miss this one!

Dark Shadows:  One of the quirkiest and most befuddled Vampire characters to ever show up on the silver screen, nobody can do Barnabas Collins like Johnny Depp can.  Mr. Depp has completely re-invented the character of the vampire yet again, this time for the complete hilarious fun of moviegoers.  Barnabus is destined to be a 2012 Halloween costume favorite and is an entertaining movie to boot.

The Dictator:  This is one of those movies that only Sacha Baron Cohen could ever think to do.  The film showcases the shenanigans of a semi-heroic dictator who lovingly ensures that his beloved country will never see the likes of democracy.  If The Dictator gets his way, his country will continue to fall under his tender, sorta loving and oppressive rule.

Men In Black III:  If you loved them the first two times, you are likely to love them again in round three.  Men in Black III will bring back your favorite characters from the original Men in Black films. In this latest chapter, the guys must resort to time travel; going back to the 1960’s in order to stop an alien from assassinating one of their own.

Rock of Ages:  Even if you didn’t live through the 1980’s, the legendary lifestyle of 1980’s rock stars makes this film relive many people’s ultimate fantasy. Small town girl meets small town boy, and their larger than life dreams are pursued with vigor.  We all want to be a rock star at one point or another; Rock of Ages is just a movie made about making that all happen.

Prometheus:  The much awaited science fiction horror thriller by Ridley-Scott Thomas has been called the prequel to Alien.  A team of explorers head into the deepest darkest corners of the universe, while looking for the origins of mankind.  Once there, a terrifying discovery is made and the fate of humankind rests upon their ability to battle against it.

That’s My Boy:  Adam Sandler has done it again when he created Donny, a misfortunate as well as supremely infantile guy who fathered a child during his youth.  Donny immaturely raised Todd until he turned 18, but was separated from him for many years during Todd’s young adulthood.  Donny resurfaces into his son’s life in the days before Todd is about to be married, creating a type of havoc and humor that only Adam Sandler can.

The Amazing Spiderman:  A newly cast Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) finds a clue that leads him to discover why his parents may have disappeared while he was growing up.  The trail of discovery leads him straight into a head to head confrontation with his father’s former partner, Dr. Curt Connors.  Spidey fan or not, this summer blockbuster is not to be missed.

Ted:  Mark Wahlberg stars in this tale of a man and his come-to-life Teddy Bear.   A bit of an impasse is reached when John must eventually choose between his girlfriend and his now living, wish come true, foul-mouthed, very irreverent and tasteless teddy.

The Dark Knight:  The long awaited latest release in the series of Batman films arrives in theatres July 20.  A new terrorist, Bane, is creating all sorts of problems for Gotham City’s finest, who are quickly losing control.  Batman must now come out, resurfacing once again in order assist Gotham’s law-keepers in protecting his beloved city by hopefully keeping this new bad boy at bay.

The boys of summer.  Characters coming to life this summer in a theatre near you!
