Happy Mother’s Day!

This Sunday, May 11th is Mother’s Day so I want to wish all those wonderful, hard-working mother’s and soon to be mother’s out there a “Happy Mother’s Day”!  Sit back, relax and enjoy the day.  Ok, so that’s easier said than done sometimes, but you should definitely give it a try.

Every year on the Saturday before Mother’s Day we have my whole family over for a cookout to celebrate Mother’s Day plus ring in the summer (a little early) by opening the pool and letting all the kids swim.  At least that’s always our plan, but with the weather you never know what you’re going to get this time of year.  I always thought the saying went, “April Showers Bring May Flowers” but apparently this year Mother Nature didn’t get that memo!  It’s been raining all week and is supposed to keep raining into the weekend.  We’ll still have our cookout because the outside deck is covered,  but I think the swimming might just have to wait until our Memorial Day Weekend party.   I love having the party on Saturday because even though it’s for Mother’s Day there’s still a lot of planning, organizing and cleaning up that goes into it, so that makes Sunday my day to really relax and do nothing.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Joust In Time For the Renaissance Festival!

If you’ve never been to a Renaissance Festival then you should definitely make 2008 your year to go!  As they say, it’s like 400 years of fun in a single day!  This year the 19th annual Ohio Renaissance Festival runs from August 30th thru October 19th.  What better way to spend a nice fall day than to be entertained by valient knights or swindling pirates?  The “Open-air Marketplace” is amazing with all the arts and crafts from a time long, long ago.  It’s always fun to do a little 16th century shopping with 21st century plastic!

By today’s standards it’s almost impossible to find a place to go as a family where everyone can have fun and enjoy themselves no matter what their age.  The Renaissance festival is one such place!  Furthermore, they encourage visitors to enter into the spirit of things with costumes and audience participation.  What better way to do this than by wearing one of our Renaissance costumes when you go.  We have them in all sizes for men, women and children.  So grab a costume and step back to a historic time of jousting, Robin Hood and Queen Elizabeth I.  You’ll be glad you did!

Take Me Out To The Ball Game!

Tuesday was the opening day of one of our nation’s favorite pastimes – baseball!  The game between the Red Sox and A’s, which was played in Japan, is apparently a very positive event for the game of baseball.  From everything I’ve read, Major League Baseball’s decision to hold opening day in Japan is another step in successfully growing the game internationally.

Opening day is always exciting for the Major League Baseball season.  Every team starts off with the same record and every fan jumps on the bandwagon in hopes that their team will go all the way this year (although everyone knows that a “true” fan never jumped off the bandwagon to begin with – even if their team was doing badly)!  Monday, March 31 is the opening day game for my favorite team – the Cincinnati Reds.  They play against they Arizona Diamondbacks and it will be a great game!  Our weather is finally warming up and it’s going to be a beautiful spring day in Cincinnati.  Every year my husband and some of his friends take off work and make a day of it by going to lunch down on the river and then walking across the bridge to see the Reds play their opening day game.

If you’ve got an opening day game coming up, be sure to check out all of our baseball costumes and accessories – you’ll be the life of the party!

Spring Break Florida Style

I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter holiday.  I had my family over for a big ham dinner and everyone had a really nice time.  The best part for the kids was the Easter egg hunt we do every year.  There is one “golden” egg that we hide for the older children that has a $50 bill in it and it’s hidden so well in the backyard that it’s always the last to be found.  My nephew Taylor found it this year.  It worked out well for him because he’s getting ready to go to Panama City for Spring Break with some of his friends and of course who couldn’t use some extra cash for that!

Speaking of spring break – my children are off school next week for theirs.  We’re not going any where this year so I’ve decided to take them someplace fun each day, even just for a day at the local park so they can run off some energy and play with their friends.  It seems the younger they are the easier it is to entertain them!  My brother has a daughter that is a senior in high school and she’s going to Florida with some of her friends for the week.  His wife is actually going too with a couple of the other moms and staying at a hotel a little further up the beach.

I remember going to Daytona Beach my senior year with a bunch of my friends and we had a great time just laying on the beach all day and walking up and down the strip at night meeting so many kids from other schools.   Back then it was all innocent fun and none of us got in any trouble.  But I’ll tell you what, I am not looking forward to my kids heading off to Florida for their spring breaks when they’re in college.  Just watching MTV and seeing how wild college spring breaks are now makes me a little nervous.  It’s a whole different ball game now!  Although thankfully I’ve got plenty of time to worry about that since my oldest boy Caden is only eight years old.  My brother and sister both have children in high school and college this year.  While they’re freaking out about letting their kids go, I just say ”don’t worry they’ll be fine”.  However, when it’s my turn to let my kids go to Florida for spring break when they’re older you can bet I’ll be freaking out!

Dr. Seuss – Read Across America Day

Cat In The Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, Hop on Pop – these are just a few of the wonderful books by Dr. Seuss that we all grew up with, our children grew up with, and their children will grow up with.  Sunday, March 2, is Theodore Seuss Geisel’s birthday (better known as Dr. Seuss).  In celebration of this special day, Monday, March 3, Random House and the National Education Association are having their second annual ”Read Across America” Day.  Join the millions of kids, teens and adults on that day by picking up a book and reading to a child.

Many schools, librarys and centers across the nation will be celebrating “Read Across America” on March 3.  What better way to show children the fun of reading Dr. Seuss than by actually becoming the Cat In The Hat!  At Halloween Express we have deluxe Cat In The Hat costumes for all ages.  The children will enjoy dressing up as Cat In The Hat just as much as the adults will.  What a great way for the whole family to have fun!

From the words of Dr. Seuss himself, “You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child”!
