10 Reasons to get Excited About Fall

10 Reasons To Get Excited About Fall

Towards the end of August many people start feeling a little sad because summer is slowly disappearing.  Warm weather merchandise is long gone from the stores, and the kids are getting ready to go back to school.  The end of summer does bring with it a distinct sense that something wonderful is coming to a close, but the good new is that the fall brings with it a whole new set of magical things!  There’s no point in being sad about the summer wind down with so much to look forward to.  Here’s our list of 10 reasons why you should be absolutely looking forward to the autumn months!

Perfect Weather:  There is nothing better than the weather during the fall season.  The extreme heat of the summer is gone.  Most of the time, autumn days are still fairly warm, yet the nights are just crisp enough to grab that favorite sweater or jacket to take off the chill.  Springtime weather can be unpredictable, while winter is just far too long and cold.   Yes, gone are the hot and lazy days spent baking by the pool, but the temperate fall days can be almost magical.

Back To School: There is something about going to Back-to-School that signals a fresh start. Arguably, most people think of New Year’s as the big starting over point, but for kids, a new school year may be the perfect time to begin anew.   Kids actually love shopping for new school supplies.  There is something fresh and wonderful about new books, pencils, markers, notebooks, and perhaps even a new pair of sneakers to wear on that first day of school.  Once school is back in session, you also won’t be looking to entertain bored kids anymore.  This is a definite fall bonus for most parents.

Football Season:  Football season is nearly upon us, and if you don’t have a favorite local team to watch live in a stadium, America’s best pastime is probably coming to a television and living room near you!  Football brings with it many excuses to get together with your group to party even if you aren’t a huge fan of the sport.  Tailgating parties before games are always great fun.  Watching the game on TV with your family and friends is made even livelier with appropriate game fare and lots to drink.

Fall Foliage:  There is nothing like the vibrant color changes that happen to leaves as they begin to change in the fall.  Even your average tree can suddenly become a rainbow of yellow, green and gold.  Autumn is a good time to take the long way home.  Find the tree-lined side streets nearby to really take in the leaves and their color changes.  If you have a mountain nearby, the canyons can be glorious during the fall.  The sound of the crisp leaves underfoot after they have fallen to the ground is another reminder of fall.  Kids love to gather the leaves, throw them up or just jump right into large piles of them.  Leaves are such a simple autumn pleasure.

Halloween:  Halloween is nearly as exciting as Christmas for many children (and some adults too!)  Dressing up in costume is really, really fun and exciting for kids of all ages.  The candy is great, too, and Halloween brings with it the perfect excuse to indulge, along with a wide variety of mini-versions of all your favorite sweets.  Halloween parties, and all the fun surrounding them are always memorable.

Autumn Festivals:  Many communities have a variety of Harvest festivals, fairs, and community activities during the fall.  Oktoberfest is a popular theme to celebrate in the autumn months.  Enjoying a fall festival is the perfect way to get outdoors and enjoy the crisp fall weather and celebrate with your friends and neighbors.  Enjoy the fun, food and family time at your local celebration.

Television’s New Season:  Every fall each network comes out with it’s new season of television programs.  No more summer re-runs as the latest editions of your favorite shows will soon be off and running, along with new programs that the networks have been cooking up for your viewing pleasure!

Fashion:  Fall is the best time of the year if you are a fashionista.  Stores are fully loaded with the latest and greatest fashions for you to indulge yourself in.  There is something about the rich color palette of autumn clothing that really livens up a wardrobe, along with the vibrant colors and mixed textures of fall fabrics.

Autumn Treats:  Ah, there is something delectable about the taste treasures you are going to find to tantalize your taste buds in the fall.  From that first pumpkin latte at your coffee shop, to pumpkin and apple pies–there is much to enjoy in the fall.  Hot chocolate, mulled cider and other warm drinks are comforting and relaxing and especially fun to drink while out in the cool night air.  Embrace the fall season with your favorite autumnal food and drink splurges.

Smells: Fall just smells really good.  From the first time you smell a waft of smoke coming from a neighbor’s chimney, to the aroma of something wonderful baking in your own oven, there is a smorgasbord of smells to enjoy in the fall.  Cool, clean crisp air smells invigorating.  Coffee shops and stores are filled with the wonderful fragrances of cinnamon, vanilla, cloves and apples.  Even fresh cut grass mixed with the smell of burning leaves can be reminiscent to some.

As your summer winds down, you can look back with fondness to all the fun memories you’ve made and look ahead with great anticipation to all that lies ahead this fall.  Autumn is filled with so many wonderful, yet simple pleasures.  There are many beautiful things to be enjoyed during the fall months and so much to look forward to!

10 Reasons To See A Movie This Summer

10 Reason to See a Movie This Summer

Mid-summer has arrived and perhaps the initial excitement of the seasons is wearing a bit thin.  Maybe the kids are starting to get antsy or perhaps your planned family vacation isn’t soon enough– or even worse it’s already over.   A great escape for the entire family that takes little effort and planning is an outing to your local movie theatre to see a really great summer blockbuster.

The latest edition of Transformers was released this past week and soon the film Zookeeper as well as the latest (and last) of the Harry Potter films will be coming to a theatre near you.  These are all movies you are going to want to see come alive on the big screen.  If you still aren’t convinced that going out to the movies should be on your summertime agenda, here is our list of 10 reasons why it should be!

Unparalleled picture size and Surround Sound:  The most obvious reason to see a movie in the theatre is to see the film up on the big screen.  There really is no other way to feel as wrapped up in the film as you will by seeing the movie up on the largest screen available.  The sound system is always going to be incredible and will enhance the movie to perfection.   All films are most enjoyably seen in the theatre but in particular, some films are almost considered  “must sees” in this fashion.  Your favorite action films that are filled with mesmerizing special effects would be the obvious front-runners for large screen theatre viewing.

Audience reactions:  Although there is always the risk that you will have someone kicking your seat or talking loudly at inappropriate times, generally speaking, having a large audience makes movie –watching much more exciting.  The laughs are more raucous, the sighs become quite audible and the screams are louder than ever–making your whole movie experience much more thrilling.  Having a packed movie theatre to share in your movie viewing experience is bound to create a contagious excitement and will add to the fun.

Snacks:  As soon as you walk into a movie theatre you can smell the buttered popcorn.  There is something about movie popcorn that is unlike popcorn made anywhere else.  Movie theatres have a full staff at your disposal to prepare and serve you not only crunchy popcorn, but gooey, cheesy nachos as well as hot dogs with all trimmings.  Don’t forget a really big drink to wash it all down and of course, something chocolate.

Getting out of the house:  There is something about getting out of the house that can give you a nice psychological boost.  Watching a movie in a theatre feels more like an event than watching one at home while plopped on the couch.  Taking some time away from your phone, computer, work and front doorbell is a good mental break.  Of course once you walk into the movie theatre don’t forget to turn your cell phone off to complete your communication silence!

Still a bargain:  Even though the cost of going to the movies has continued to rise, it is still a bargain compared to other social outings.   Live theatre tickets, concerts, etc. are still much more expensive than attending a movie which still is considered by most to be affordable.  Matinee show times are often discounted, so if your budget is restricted, attend your favorite movie during the daytime.

Previews:  Most people forget about these until they are sitting in the theatre waiting for the show to begin.  Watching clips of upcoming films is an unexpected treat that can get you really excited about what is new and exciting in the world of film.  Previews can also give you some ideas about what movies you’d like to see on your next outing.  Obviously previews are designed to get movie-goer’s intrigued and enthused about what’s going to be coming out in the near future so you definitely won’t want to miss out on these if you are a real movie buff.  On the flip side, sometimes a preview will give you enough information about a movie so that you can actually decide to pass if a particular show isn’t for you.

Easing first date jitters:  Although we are generally not an advocates of going to the movies on a first date, sometimes if you are very young or extremely nervous, going to a movie for a date is the perfect solution to getting through the experience in one piece.  Sitting in silence in a movie theatre isn’t awkward like it may be in other circumstances and you won’t have to force any small talk.   Watching a film with a date (whether it’s good or bad) will give you something to talk about afterward and hopefully by that point you will be more relaxed and into a date night groove.

Selection:  All you have to do is look at the marquis at your local cinema to see that there are many choices and types of movies to go and see.  If your family is not necessarily in total agreement you may even be able to coordinate your viewing so that you can split up and see different movies at the same time.  At your local theatre right now there is something for everyone as well as many choices that the entire family will enjoy together.

Water cooler conversation:  If you want to see the latest and the greatest movies out there, you are going to have to see them in the theatre.  By the time most films come out on DVD they are fairly old and nearly considered yesterday’s news.  People are always going to be super excited and will clamor to see the big movie blockbusters every season.  Going to the theatre to see the latest films ensures that you are going to know what all the fuss is about in the media as well as having something fun to discuss at the water cooler.  Hitting the theatre ensures that you will be one of the first to see what everyone is talking about when it comes to a new movie.

Cure for the summertime blues:  Hopefully by now you are convinced that going out to the movies is a great idea and could be the perfect break up of any summertime monotony you are experiencing.   If your kids are hot, tired, bored and restless a movie break might be just the perfect thing to improve everyone’s mood as well as their frame of mind.

With so many exciting summer movies in the theatres, now’s the time to get out of the heat and head to the nearest air-conditioned theatre for a few hours of really great entertainment.   See you at the movies!

Johnny Depp reprises the role of Jack Sparrow on another crazy action packed adventure bound to be entertaining for your entire family.  In this latest sequel, Jack sets out to find the Fountain of Youth and in the process reconnects with a woman from his past.  Has Jack found true love?  Or is he being duped by this woman (Penelope Cruz) as she beguiles him into her web of lies and forces him onto the vicious pirate Blackbeard’s ship, The Queen Anne’s Revenge.   On his quest to find the Fountain of Youth, now Jack our slightly cockamamy buccaneer finds himself in the middle of a zany adventure where he is unsure who to fear most, this woman from his past or Blackbeard himself.

The saga of Po the Panda (voice of Jack Black) continues as he and his cohorts, known as the Furious Five encounter a new and evil villain.  The maniacal scoundrel, Lord Shen (voice of Gary Oldman) has a secret and unstoppable weapon and is set on the destruction of China and the martial arts.  Po and his furious friends are on a mission to seek out the enemy and overpower it.

Mr. Popper’s Penguins

Mr. Popper (Jim Carrey) hasn’t always been the nicest guy.   Little did he know however that in his quest to have an arctic adventure he would become suddenly housemates with 6 adorable and very energetic live penguins.  Jim Carrey adds his own quirky and hilarious dimension to this 1938 children’s book character.  This movie is bound to delight you and your children as Mr. Popper adjusts to the shenanigans and hilarity that living with a bunch of penguins has created.   You will roll with laughter while the iciness of Mr. Poppers persona is melted down by his new arctic friends.

The Green Lantern

Based on the DC Comics strip of the same name, the Green Lantern Corps are a brotherhood of warriors that are sworn to protect intergalactic order and perpetuate peace and justice in the universe.  This powerful force has existed for many centuries but a vicious enemy called the Parallax threatens the balance of power in the Universe.  The fate of the Earth lies in the power of the Green Lantern and in the hands of their newest member, Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds).  Hal is talented and smart but very arrogant.  The Green Lantern members are dubious about humans and a human has never fully adapted to the powers of the ring that gives each of them super powers.  Watch and see if Hal can overcome his struggles and overcome the powers of the evil Parallax.

Cars 2

Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) and his tow truck Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy) are back in action racing in the first ever World Grand Prix.   Of course there are a few bumps in the road including Mater getting involved in some international espionage!  Mater the tow truck is caught between helping Lightning race against the world’s fastest cars and getting involved in a clandestine spy mission of his own.

X-Men: First Class

The Marvel Comics heroes are recreated from the beginning of their saga back from the very beginning.  Before the identities of Professor X and Magneto even existed there were two young men just discovering their powers for the first time.  Before they declared themselves enemies they were actually very good friends and cohorts.  Together with other mutants they were going to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known.  Over time, a disagreement ensued which began the legendary war between Magneto’s brotherhood and Professor X’s X men.

Winnie The Pooh

Disney’s most beloved bear is back with his entire gang of characters for this latest Disney animated film that will surely become a classic.  Tigger, Eeyore, Roo, Kanga, Piglet and Christopher Robin are all back to have a wild and hare-brained adventure that is set in the 100-acre woods.

Candy, Chicks & Rock ‘n’ Roll!

Candy, Chicks & Rock n Roll

Candy, Chicks & Rock n Roll

Candy, Chicks & Rock ‘n’ Roll can be found on billboards from coast to coast promoting the new animated movie coming out Friday called Hop.  It’s from the producers of Despicable Me and I for one can’t wait to see it!  We loved Despicable Me and I know this movie will be just as cute!

You just have to love the way they’re promoting this film – candy, chicks & rock ‘n’ roll is a great attention getter!  The movie is about E.B., the Easter Bunny’s rebel teenage son, who instead of wanting to take on the role of Easter Bunny decides to run off to Hollywood with dreams of becoming a drummer in a rock ‘n’ roll band.   The movie has some great characters besides E.B. – there’s Carlos, the “chick in charge” who’s trying to take over as the Easter Bunny and the Pink Berets who are sent by E.B.’s dad to bring him back to Easter Island.

Illumination Entertainment knew what they were doing releasing the movie April 1st right in time for the Easter holiday madness, getting everyone in the “here comes Peter Cottontail” spirit!  I know my family will be right there in line after school on Friday to see Hop!

Take me out to the ball game!

Let's Play Ball1

Thwwwwwack! Do you recognize that sound? It’s the crack of the baseball bat hitting that first ball of the season. You can hear it in your mind can’t you? Indeed, we all know that sound and baseball is called the Great American pastime for a reason. The sport is imbedded deeply into our souls as well as into our culture and for those of us that are baseball fans, it might even go a bit deeper.

Historically our Baseball heroes have become almost God-like legends over time. Great baseball players seem to live on forever in our hearts. We pay homage to them through songs, movies – and even baseball costumes – made to remember them and the great sport of baseball. Films have been made to celebrate baseball—no one could forget the epic “Field of Dreams” where the building of a baseball field became a man’s life passion as well as his obsession. True baseball fans loved the idea that legendary baseball players who have gone on into the great beyond could come back (as ghosts) to play their beloved sport on hallowed ground–an Iowa cornfield. Who would believe that such a tale would be so revered? It wasn’t really about men coming back to life at all as these weren’t just men-they were baseball players. We do tend to hold many of our baseball players up on pedestals. Even some of the more colorful baseball rogues are forgiven for their life’s transgressions because they could play a memorable and great game. These athletes live a bit of a charmed existence for that reason.

Everyone knows a song or two celebrating baseball. John Fogerty’s “Centerfield” is my personal favorite and just hearing the line “Put me in coach!” makes me suddenly crave a Dodger Dog. If I even mention “Take Me Out To The Ball Game” you are likely to be singing it in your head for the rest of the day—“Buy me some peanuts and Crackerjack’s—I don’t care if we ever come back!” It’s just how it is—everyone knows that song whether they’ve been to a baseball game or not. It’s part of who we are.

This year, April 1st marks baseball season’s opening day. It’s not really surprising to me that a day known for silly pranks and tomfoolery would be the perfect and appropriate day to celebrate the beginning of Baseball season. Baseball’s history is shrouded in superstition and myth and yes–probably more than a few silly pranks.

There are more superstitions surrounding baseball than really any other sport. You may have heard of “The Curse of the Goat.” Billy Slanis, (the owner of Billy Goat Tavern) brought his goat to one of the games at Wrigley Field in 1945. He was asked to leave as fans were offended by the smelly odor of the goat. When leaving, Billy was outraged at his dismissal and shouted out loud for all to hear, “Them Cubs will not win no more”—this statement is often interpreted to mean that the Cubs will never win another World Series game at Wrigley Field. Many believe that this curse will not be lifted either, until Wrigley makes nice with all goats and welcomes them openly to Wrigley Field. Many attempts have been made over the years to break the curse but all have apparently failed.

Baseball players are notoriously superstitious. When on a winning streak players have been known to not cut their hair or shave or some will not even launder various parts of their uniform while they are still winning. We’ve all seen players tap the base while getting ready to bat. Is tapping lucky? Some players have a “lucky” bat or glove that they like to use as well. It’s a very well known fact amongst players and sports commentators that it is very bad luck to even mention the possibility of a no-hitter while it is still indefinite. Dare not even mention the subject or utter the words “no-hitter”—it is a known jinx to do so amongst baseball circles until the game has officially ended.

Whether you are a little leaguer, a die-hard fan, or just love the game, baseball season is now upon us and that’s reason enough to celebrate. From now until November you can find yourself rooting for your favorite home team. It’s time to dust off your baseball player bobbleheads, start wearing your rally caps and get ready to eat the best darn hot dogs known to mankind. Joe DiMaggio once said, “You always get a special kick on Opening Day, no matter how many you go through. You look forward to it like a birthday party when you were a kid. You think something wonderful is going to happen.” Take me out to the ball game—indeed!
