Halloween Safety Tips for Your Pet!

Halloween is going to the dogs!  As you well know by now if you’ve read any of my previous blogs, I love seeing pets dressed up for Halloween in pet costumes.  Of course it’s more of the pet owner’s idea than it is of the pets, but it’s still adorable to see little Fido dressed as Superman

As cute as it is to dress up your dog or cat and parade them around the neighborhood, Halloween can still be a very frightening time for pets.  We’ve all heard of safety tips for your children, but did you know there are safety tips for your pets too?  Each year veterinarians nationwide see pet injuries that could have been avoided if only the pet owner would have known how to protect their pet on Halloween night.

Here are some ways to help keep your pet safe and stress-free on Halloween:

  • Find a secure place in your home to keep your pets, especially if you’re giving out candy to trick-or-treaters.  Many dogs get loose when the door opens and the presence of little (and big) costumed people often scares them, increasing the chance your dog will run away or get hit by a car.
  • Make sure your pet is wearing an up-to-date I.D. collar and tag and/or a microchip.
  • Consider crating your pet, which can make him feel more secure and reduce chances of accidental escapes.  Give them plenty of chew toys, a favorite blanket or anything that comforts your pet.
  • Always keep your pet indoors.  In addition to the parade of trick-or-treaters frightening and agitating them, there have been reports of taunting, poisonings, and pet thefts.
  • No tricks, no treats.  Chocolate in all forms can be very dangerous for dogs and cats.  It contains Theobromine, which can cause nerve damage and even death in dogs.  The darker the chocolate, the more concentrated it is and the smaller the lethal dose.  Tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers can be hazardous as well as causing choking or intestinal obstruction if swallowed.

All of these things are simple to do.  I always hated walking up to a door with my child, ringing the doorbell and having their dog come bolting up to the door barking up a storm.  You never know if when they open the door to give my child candy if that dog is coming out too.  For the most part all dogs just bark when someone rings the doorbell and they’re as harmless as a fly, but it’s still a little nerve racking when it’s your child standing on the other side of that door.  If your dog has any aggressive tendencies, fear of loud noises or a habit of excessive barking, put him in a quiet room as far away from your front door as possible at least a half-hour before trick-or-treaters arrive.  It’s always better to be safe than sorry!

How Times Have Changed!

Can you believe school is starting up already?  It seems like this summer flew by (although I’m sure it felt that way to my kids more so than me)!  One minute I’m emptying out their backpacks from the end of the school year, the next thing I know I’m filling it back up with all new school supplies.  I always dread the “school supply” shopping trips.  It seems I pick the same day as everybody else in the free world when taking my kids to get all their stuff.  No matter what day of the week or time of the day, it’s always packed.  I have learned a valuable lesson over the years – never take all your children at the same time!  If you take them one at a time it’s so much easier, physically as well as mentally on both us and the kids!  Whatever happened to a kid needing good old fashioned number 2 pencils, crayons and a couple of 2-pocket folders?  My gosh now it’s mechanical pencils, highlighters, 5-subject notebooks college ruled and 3-ring binders – and that’s my kindergartners list!  Actually I’m kidding about that but it is amazing how times have changed from just being excited about coloring between the lines.

Times have changed with Halloween costumes as well.  When I was little my sisters and I always wanted to be beautiful princesses for Halloween and my brothers were always superheroes.  Today instead of just Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty to pick from girls can be a Renaissance or Butterfly Princess or to the other extreme a Vampire or Devil Princess.  The options are endless!  So whether you want to get out there and keep up with the changing times by wearing some of the really cool up-to-date costumes or if you’re more like me and still like the ”old-school” costumes, you’ll find everything you need here at Halloween Express!

Spooktacular Yard Decorating!

Even though the Halloween season is still a couple months away, already the stores are displaying all their haunted decorations and accessories.  Labor Day will be here in a little over three weeks, school will once again be in session and Halloween will be at the top of everyones priority list.

Now is a great time to start picking up little odds and ends for decorating your front yard.  Just like with costumes and parties, it’s easier to decorate your yard if you have a theme to go by.  You can use individual theme ideas such as;

  • The Graveyard – the most important prop of this theme is definitely tombstones – all shapes and sizes.  Tilting a few of them will give the graveyard an old and delapidated look.  Let your grass grow a little higher than usual giving it an unkept effect. Skeletons are another great prop.  What would a eerie graveyard be without a few skeletons lying about?  Hang some from the trees or drape them over the tombstones.
  • The Haunted Woods – this theme works well if you have a lot of trees in your front yard.  Hang big spiders and bats from the tree limbs and spread cobwebs from the branches.  The grim reaper standing in the middle of the yard will add to the scare factor and give it a sinister look.  Place jack-o-lanterns with creepy faces cut out in different areas of the yard included the porch, insert a pumpkin strobe light into the jack-o-lantern.

No matter what your decorating theme, every yard haunt needs two very important accessories to give it a truly haunted effect, a fog machine and scary music.  Every year we have both of these and I’m telling you it’s perfect!  Every one that walks by slows down just to make sure it’s safe to walk to the front door.   Darkness, fog and eerie music – what could be more perfect for Halloween night?!

Soccer Mom to Homerun Hottie With One Costume!

OK ladies this one’s for you!  I know the sports world is dominated by the men (or so they think), but this Halloween I think it’s time we showed them that we’ve got what it takes to take sports costumes to an all new level!

Growing up with older brothers I somehow always managed to end up being a baseball or football player for Halloween.  Back then I just threw on my brothers uniform, put a little black junk under my eyes and away I went.  Today it’s a whole new ballgame – no pun intended!  Not only can you dress up as a baseball or football player but also as a race car driver and even a referee.  However, the fun part is that every costume is geared toward making woman look and feel sexy even while wearing your average baseball uniform (well maybe not your “average” uniform)!

With costume names like these they’re bound to get attention!  So go on ladies, shake things up a bit this Halloween and have some fun!  Believe me the guys will never look at sports the same again!

Halloween Costumes for Tweens

Finding the perfect Halloween costume isn’t always easy, especially for “tweens”.  When kids are at that age they don’t want to wear a costume that makes them look like a baby, but they’re still just a little too young for the teenager look.  The word tween is used for children just before their teens “between” childhood and being teenagers, usually 8-12 years of age.   It doesn’t seem as important for boys as it does for girls since as we all know girls can be a little more dramatic about their appearance.

My son Caden will turn nine tomorrow so he’s still in the first half of the ”tween” ages, but my sister has two tween daughters that she goes round and round with at Halloween about what they can and can’t wear for costumes.  A lot of what they pick out (according to their mother) is geared more toward an older teenager and so she’s usually pulling her hair out before they finally come to a unanimous decision.

I told her about our new “Tween Scene” collection we have at Halloween Express.  It has something for every tween out there, boy or girl.  The tween girls  love the costume names like “High Seas Hottie” and “Pirate Cutie” and the mom’s love the fact that they are great costumes with enough coverage but still have that edge that a lot of the tween aged girls are looking for.
