October is Finally Here!

Yea, it’s finally October 1st and we’ve officially entered into the month of Halloween!  Only 30 more days until the trick-or-treaters will be ringing your doorbell.  Are you ready?  Have you stocked up on all your favorite candy to hand out?  Now remember, it has to be your favorite candy and not your children’s that way whatever is left over is all yours and you won’t have to fight for it!

Wow can you believe this great weather we’re having in Kentucky?  The high’s are in the mid to low 70′s – perfect weather for fall.  Today we had our pool closed up for the year.  That’s probably the only thing about this time of year that I don’t like.  As soon as that cover is placed over the pool and all our lounge chairs and pool toys are put in the shed the backyard looks so deserted.  Next year I want to have a heater installed in our pool so that I can have the best of both worlds; cooler weather AND the pool still open into the fall months.

So, have you thought any more about what you want to be this year for Halloween?  If you’re still not sure check out our Top 10 List of Best Costumes for the whole family or our Top 10 List of Best Sexy Costumes.  If you can’t find what you’re looking for there, then go to our homepage and simply click on a category that interests you.  The website is so easy to use and you’ll find everything you need in the click of a button.  Don’t forget to look at all our Halloween decorations for your home and yard too!

Two of my favorite decorations that I just received yesterday are the 63 inch Hanging Pirate and Tombstone RIP Cross with Skull.  The hanging pirate is huge with a long red ripped cape and creepy skull face with eyepatch.  I’ve already got him hanging on my front porch.  His arms are movable so when I spread them out to his sides he looks even bigger.  The kids love it!  It really is a great decoration for your porch or even hanging from a tree in your front yard.  There are so many great tombstones to pick from at HalloweenExpress.com but I really like this one.  It’s really tall and looks like an old and worn tombstone.   It comes in two pieces and you just slide the cross into the base.  Both of these are going to make a great addition to our yard haunt!

Pumpkins, Pumpkins and More Pumpkins!

Halloween is a time of costumes, haunted houses, hayrides and trick-or-treating, but did you know that the most visual sign of Halloween is the pumpkin?  Many centuries ago, October 31st was a magical night when glowing jack-o-lanterns, carved from turnips or gourds, were set on porches and in windows to welcome deceased loved ones, but also to act as protection against malevolent spirits.  Burning lumps of coal were used inside as a source of light, later to be replaced by candles.  Soon after, it was the Irish who decided it was much easier to use pumpkins since they were much larger and easier to carve.

During the Halloween holiday, pumpkins are carved into jack-o-lanterns and put on porches and in yards for all to see.  Today there are many different ways to decorate a pumpkin.  When I was young we would just wing-it and carve out two triangle eyes, an upside down triangle nose and a big open smiling mouth with a couple teeth here and there.  Now there are some really elaborate pumpkin carving stencils you can use to trace just about anything you like, scary or not, onto your pumpkin then start carving using pumpkin carving tools and following the lines you drew.  If you’d rather not go through the mess of cleaning out a pumpkin to carve it, you can just paint a face or design right on the pumpkin shell.  It’s really easy and my niece loves to do it that way.    The best part of carving a pumpkin in my opinion are the pumpkin seeds.  It was a tradition in my house growing up that we would take the seeds, clean them, mix in a little olive oil, garlic powder, salt and pepper then broil them in the oven until they were crisp.   I swear they are so good and taste just like popcorn!  I kept the tradition going with my family and my children love them.  Sometimes I think they carve their pumpkins just to get the seeds!

Make Your Halloween Costume Go From Good to Great With The Right Accessories!

Every year on Halloween people spend millions of dollars on costumes.  Of course costumes are what Halloween is all about as it should be.  However, the right accessories can take a good costume and make it great!  Accessories are everything.

The definition of accessory is “an article or set of articles of dress that adds completeness, convenience, attractiveness, etc., to one’s basic outfit”.  Accessorizing is really pretty simple for a Halloween costume.  Let’s take a look at a couple of our “top 10 costumes for 2008“ and see what accessories would give them that “wow” factor:

For children we have:

Indiana Jones Deluxe Child Costume – this costume comes complete with jacket and attached shirt, pants and the official Indiana Jones hat.  Sounds like all you need, huh?  Well if you happen to see the movie, Indiana Jones was hardly ever seen without his trusted whip and tote bag.  Put on some old worn shoes or boots and the look is complete.  You can even add the machete to top it off!

And at the other end of the costume spectrum for adults we have:

Miss Mafia Adult Costume - this costume comes complete with a black and pink pin-stripped halter dress, tie and cuffs with $ design cuff links.  However, if you want to portray the part of ”sexy” with this costume it’s as simple as adding a few accessories such as; fishnet stockings, a pair of high-heel shoes, a black fedora hat and if you’d like you can add the gangster “purse” briefcase for the complete look.

What is so great about ordering costumes at HalloweenExpress.com is that you don’t have to look all over the website trying to find which accessories go with which costumes.  When you find the costume you want, you’ll see a list of the accessories that go with it right there on the same page.  Just click and add them to your order – it’s that simple!  However, if it’s just accessories you’re looking for or maybe you want some more ideas of what you can add to your costume to give it that “finished” look go to our “accessories and makeup” page.  It has everything you’ll need to give your costume that perfect accessorized look!

You’re My Princess!

As a little girl I grew up believing in fairy tales.  The ones where the handsome prince falls in love with a beautiful princess and they live happily ever after.  Television shows like Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty make it impossible not to.  Disney has done a wonderful job making children believe in fairy tales and the Disney costume line makes it easy to dress like a princess too.  When my daughter, Olivia puts on her princess gown and dances around the house, there’s an innocence there that takes my breath away.  I love that my children are still young enough to believe in fairy tales of princesses and happily ever after!  As we know they grow up so fast.

To many little girls, the word princess conjurs up images of elegance, beauty, kindness and gentleness.  With their beautiful dresses and sparkly crowns what little girl wouldn’t want to be a princess?  Recently here at HalloweenExpress.com we received the sweetest letter from a girl named Casey who lives in Rincon Georgia.  She designed her own princess costume called the “Ice Princess” and sent us the cutest picture of a blue dress with a big beautiful snow flake on the front.  So you see, with a great imagination (and great fashion sense) you can be your own princess this Halloween.

Here’s Casey’s design called, “Ice Princess”:

Thank you Casey!  Your design is beautiful.
