The Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby is known as “the most exciting two minutes in sports”.  Always held on the first Saturday in May (May 3rd this year), it’s the who’s who of horse racing.  Not only with the horses, but with the celebrities as well.  Actors, sports figures, royalty and even presidents are spotted enjoying the Derby from a little known section called ”Millionaire’s Row”.

But by far the craziest party goers can be found in the “Infield” on Derby day!  I grew up in Kentucky and it’s an annual tradition for my friends and I to meet up in the infield for the party of all parties every year on the first Saturday in May.  We’ve been doing it for over 20 years now!  Of course, in college we were always partying at the “third turn” where the wild and crazy people party.  It is so much fun and the party atmosphere can only be compared to Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras!  But the last couple years as we get older we tend to lean more towards ”turn one” where it’s more of a family affair.  It’s still exciting being literally right in the middle of things!

Other staples of the Kentucky Derby are:

  • hats
  • mint juleps
  • the song – My Old Kentucky Home
  • twin spires at Churchill Downs

If you’re looking for some wild “Infield” hats we’ve got them here at Halloween Express.  You’ll be the life of the party!

Here’s some more “fyi” on the Kentucky Derby you may not know about:

  • all the horses are three-year-old thoroughbred’s
  • the track is one and a quarter miles long
  • called the “Run for the Roses” for the blanket of roses draped over the winner
  • first leg of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred racing – followed by Preakness Stakes a couple weeks later - then Belmont Stakes in June

Whether You Are Irish or Just Wish You Were

With St Patrick’s Day right around the corner everyone is thinking green.  Have you heard the saying, “On St Patrick’s Day everyone is Irish” – well, I believe it!  St Patrick’s Day is such a “fun” day with parades, parties and of course the drinking of the “green beer” at all the bars and Irish pubs.  When you’re surrounded by all the festivites and everyone is having a great time, you find yourself wishing you were Irish.  I’m telling you those Irish folk sure know how to have a good time!   Just in case you’re not of Irish decent but would like to be on March 17, here are a few Irish fun facts for you to know:

  • St Patrick - the patron Saint of Ireland who is credited with bringing Christianity to the Island.  He used the shamrock with its three leaf clovers to teach the Irish about the Holy Trinity.
  • The Luck of the Irish – if you have good luck one day you can expect bad luck the next
  • Kissing the Blarney Stone – a stone set in the wall of the Blarney Castle in the Irish village of Blarney.  Kissing the stone is supposed to bring the kisser the gift of persuasive eloquence.
  • Erin Go Bragh – Ireland Forever
  • Leprechaun - an Irish fairy, often dressed as a shoemaker.
  • Irish Pubs – ale is ordered by pints and quarts.  So in Old England when customers got unruly the bartender used to yell at them to mind their pints and quarts and settle down – hence the saying ”mind your own P’s and Q’s”.

Even though in the United States the tradition continues with people from all walks of life wearing everything and anything green – the custom in Ireland is just the opposite.  On St Patrick’s Day, it is not custom in Ireland to wear green ties, hats or other green clothes.  The preferred display is a sprig of shamrock in their coat lapel.

However, since it is custom in our neck of the woods to wear as much green as you possibly can, then what are you waiting for?  If you want to be the life of the party this year, check out our entire line of St Patrick’s Day clothing and accessories!

Super Tuesday – Fat Tuesday

Today is the day for celebration!  Fat Tuesday is the last day of Mardi Gras with tomorrow being Ash Wednesday. I’m sure there will be plenty of celebrating going on in New Orleans tonight.  And of course, for those who follow politics, today is Super Tuesday.  The closest thing to a national primary this country has ever had.  Twenty-four states hold primary elections today.  Gosh, I can’t wait until the election is over in November.  I don’t know about you but I’m tired of all the commercials … and we’re not even to the general election yet!  Yikes.

Speaking of Presidents, check out the President Day costumes and masks online. President’s Day is February 18th.

Super Bowl Sunday

Are you ready for some football?!  This Sunday, February 3 my husband will be like millions of other football fans, sitting in front of our tv, a buffalo wing in one hand and a beer in the other watching Super Bowl XLII between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants.  If you love football, there is no better way to spend Sunday!  I do enjoy watching football games, especially if my favorite team is playing (which by the way didn’t happen this year).  But, no matter what teams are playing in the Super Bowl it’s one game that everyone watches.  I’ll admit though, my favorite part of the Super Bowl is watching the commercials!  I love them!  I’m looking forward to seeing what the big advertisers come up with this year.  I think the Budweiser commercials are my favorite!  This year it’s not going to be too hard actually watching the game though because as every female out there knows – it’s not hard on the eyes to watch Tom Brady and Eli Manning play football!

The traditional Super Bowl Party is probably the least fussy, most laid-back party you can host all year.  So there is no point in holding anything back! Go all out and serve everyone’s favorite high fat, finger-licking snack foods. After all, your television set is the focal point, not the food. Wings, subs, pizza and chili are just some of the easily prepared (or even easier – ordered) foods that people love to eat at Super Bowl party’s.  Throw a basket of chips or pretzels around and your set.  Although don’t forget you have to have plenty of beer to wash down all that food.

I don’t have a favorite in Sunday’s big game which will make it easy for me to sit back relax and enjoy the festivities.  Here’s to Super Bowl XLII!!

Oh, and don’t forget … Tuesday is FAT TUESDAY.  You still have time to get that Mardi Gras mask online!
