When I Was Young I Wanted To Be . . .

Enchanting Princess Costume

As children, part of being a kid is imaginative playtime and dress up.  We all had our childlike dreams and fantasies that we liked to use during trips through our imagination.  We envisioned heroes, larger than life characters as well as glitzy superstars.  Most of the time, when we grow up, we are forced to leave our childhood dreams dormant somewhere in the back of our minds.  For Halloween, perhaps it’s time to dust off some of those old childhood memories and recreate those fantasies as a perfect Halloween costume that brings back a little of your inner child.  Here’s our list of the Top 10 Halloween costumes for 2011 that will bring back some of your favorite childhood fantasies!

Superheroes-There probably isn’t a kid alive that hasn’t played “superhero” at one point or another in his/her life.  With so many great and powerful characters to choose from, it will be very easy to find one that fits into the superhero mold that you imagined when you were a child.  Caped and flying through the air, using superhuman strength and powers, scaling walls with ease and overcoming evil at every possible turn is just plain cool, not to mention fun.  What’s not to love about being a superhero?

Rock Stars-With air guitar in hand, many of us as children found our selves deep in the fantasy of being a real Rock Star.  We envisioned being up on a stage, rocking out with fabulously loud music blaring out of huge amps, hungry, screaming fans in the audience and a stage nearly set afire with cool pyrotechnics.  Rock Stars seemed to live a life of perfect fantasy and more than a few of us wanted to be one.  Perhaps many of us still do.

Firemen or Policemen-Considered by many to be the ultimate local heroes, most of us as children played games like cops and robbers, where good always prevailed over evil and the bad guys were hauled away into a pretend jail.  Children often fantasize about being firefighters as well—driving that big red truck with the siren a-blazing as it roars down the street.  Performing rescue operations was all in day’s work for the brave firefighter, no wonder it’s a favorite pretend imaginative character for kids.

Military Personnel-Participating in a pretend battle was a favorite childhood pastime for many of us.  We’d lurk in the bushes with our toy machine guns and wait for our enemy (the neighbor kids) to come by so we could ambush them and attack.  Dressing in camouflage or other military regalia is the perfect way to recreate the childhood version of war games and will also pay homage to those who serve in the armed forces today.

Pop Star-Many of us have latent fantasies about being various pop stars.  When I was a teenager, I envisioned myself as Blondie, sexily crooning the likes of ‘Heart of Glass’ and ‘One Way or Another’.  My Pop Star dreams fell a little short and yours may have too, but recreating a costume look based on Madonna or Michael Jackson may be the perfect way to get this Pop Star dream completely out of your system once and for all.

Princess-Nearly every little girl goes through her ‘princess’ phase. Dressed in appropriate royal attire from tiaras down to glass slippers, her regal and elegant appearance brought handsome men to her in droves.  Well, that was the theory anyway.  Princesses often found themselves in dire circumstances that required some handsome hottie to come by and do the rescuing.  Hey, what can I say, even little girls are smart and I guess we all learned young what worked.  Being a princess is a sweet gig and it’s no wonder why many of us wanted to be one if only in our imaginations.

TV or Movie Star-Without too much fanfare, I will confess to a wicked obsession with wanting to become Marcia Brady from The Brady Bunch.  She was TV’s “it” girl when I was very young and if I could have been her, even for a day, I gladly would have.  Many of us continue to have TV and movie icons from our younger days that are still inside of us, waiting to come out.  You’d be amazed at how many of these looks can be recreated easily with appropriate and accurate costumes.  Be still my heart!

Astronaut or Pilot-These guys are so cool it’s unreal.  Many of us can remember watching the Apollo missions on TV and over the years many Shuttle launchings have been seen as well.  Astronauts bravely leave this world and explore territory that is foreign and unfamiliar to us poor earthbound folks.  Traveling into space is a fantasy that many of us have had.  Pilots as well, especially military pilots such as those from the movie Top Gun, are crazy-brave and fearless.  Astronauts and Pilots are an out of this world costume idea!

Cheerleader- Beautiful, sexy and popular, many girls fantasize about being a cheerleader.  Little girls do dance routines, cartwheels and flips in their yards as they dream about one day cheering their team onto victory while their pom poms flip about overhead.  From the super sexy professional sports team cheerleaders (Can you say Dallas Cowboys?) to the more traditional cheer girls found at your ol’ alma mater, the cheerleader is a popular childhood dream that might be fun to re-live.  A little bizarre, but definitely totally hilarious, grown men have been known to dress up as cheerleaders, too.

Sports Star-Many of us wannabe athletes dreamt of one day making it big as a sports superstar.  Football, basketball, baseball, hockey—we fantasized about making that clutch winning score right at the buzzer as the crowd goes completely wild!  Recreating a sports look to bring out your inner athlete is a great way to relive those childhood fantasies and bring them to life, at least for the night.  Even if you are a non-athlete you can always be the ultimate sports power figure—the referee.

Halloween is a great time to get back in touch with the characters you fantasized about being as a child and become them temporarily on Halloween.  Real life gets in the way of much of what we dreamed about as children.  Get back in touch with those memories and good times this Halloween with an appropriate costume straight out of your childhood memory banks.

Fourth of July Ideas for Patriotic Fun

6 Ideas To Get Your 4th of July Started

The Fourth of July can sneak up on us without much warning.  Just as all the school graduation ceremonies and Father’s day activities are winding down, another holiday weekend is here.  Because the 4th is at the beginning of the month, sometimes it’s easy to forget to make your plans ahead of time.  If you start now you can make your plans for a weekend that has great holiday potential.  The Fourth of July occurs on a Monday this year, which also means a 3-day weekend for most people.   Make sure your Fourth of July is filled with all sorts of good patriotic summer fun.  Here’s 6 great ideas to get your Fourth of July holiday started.

Learn About Our Nation’s History:  A great way to engage your children in both learning about the history of the Fourth of July as well as to have some fun is to play a game of Fourth of July trivia.  Assemble an assortment of fun facts, history and trivia about Independence Day and quiz the kids or play a game that is focused around the information you have gathered.  Your kids will love learning the facts about the holiday and will get excited about why we celebrate the Fourth of July.

Dress Patriotically:  Whether you are attending a family or community Fourth of July event, you are bound to get into the spirit of the day all the more with an appropriate patriotic costume.  Colonial costumes are a fun choice or you can dress up as the traditional Uncle Sam.  Other unique costume choices for your Independence Day celebration are the Statue of Liberty, or any assortment of political figures, perhaps even George Washington.  Of course a very easy way to get into the spirit of the day is to just dress up in the colors red, white and blue from head to toe—use your imagination and be creative.  Don’t forget to wear your stars and stripes!

Create Neighborhood traditions:  Create a neighborhood tradition for your Fourth of July that everyone on your block is going to look forward to.  Have a neighborhood potluck or BBQ with all of the trimmings.  This is a great time to have a watermelon-eating contest or a chili cook off to get your neighborhood chefs motivated.   Have the kids decorate their bicycles in red, white and blue colors and have a bike parade.  Buy some inexpensive and small American Flags at a novelty store and attach them to everyone on your street’s mailbox.  This Fourth of July event is bound to become an event that your entire neighborhood looks forward to.

Uncle Sam Photo:  This is a fun tradition that the entire family can participate in.  Have everyone in the family make an Uncle Sam hat and take a traditional family portrait-Fourth of July style.  You can get very crafty with this if you like by adding spinners, glitter, etc. to the hats.  Start an album with your Fourth of July photographs including the pictures that you take during other fun activities that you do that day.  This family album will begin a fun tradition that you can keep adding to on a yearly basis.  Over time the photo album will become something your entire family will certainly cherish.

Take a Patriotic Vacation:  There are some very fun as well as traditional locations that you and your entire family can visit over the Fourth of July.  If you want to make the most of your family vacation and celebrate the holiday weekend in a patriotic fashion consider visiting one of our nations more historic locales.  New York City, Washington D.C., Philadelphia as well as Colonial Williamsburg, VA are some cities to consider visiting.  Immersing yourself in the local 4th of July festivities of one of these heritage rich cities is bound to be memorable for all your family members.

The Big Finale:  No Fourth of July celebration would be complete without watching a fireworks display after dark.  Scout out your community’s local fireworks event or perhaps try a different venue out of town for a change.  Many beach communities have amazing fireworks displays that you can watch down on the pier.  Plan your holiday barbecue to coincide with your evening’s activities and get that perfect spot to watch the fireworks from after the sun goes down.  If you don’t live near the beach, many cities set off fireworks at local venues or community parks.

No matter what you choose to do for your Fourth of July celebration, it’s a perfect opportunity to bond with your friends and family as well as to create memories that you will have for a lifetime.  Let your inner patriot fly free and make this Fourth of July be your best one yet!

It’s Summer Blockbuster Time!

Summer Blockbusters

It’s that time of year again—the season every die-hard movie lover looks forward to.  It’s summer blockbuster time!   Now that the warmer weather is here there will be throngs of people choosing to escape the heat by heading into the air-conditioned movie theater for some great summertime entertainment.

This summer could very easily be called “The Year of the Sequel” as many if not most of the biggest summer blockbusters scheduled to be released are sequels, prequels or movie franchises.  If you can’t get too much of a good thing—this is definitely a great summer for movies.  We’ve compiled our list of the best of the sequels not to be missed this year.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (May 20, 2011)

Johnny Depp is back for the 4th installment of this ever-popular Disney franchise as well as Geoffrey Rush.  Penelope Cruz joins the cast in an adventure that has Jack Sparrow seeking out the Fountain of Youth.  Blackbeard (played by Ian McShane) is a new addition to the cast  that shares the same quest.  It looks like Disney has definitely done it again!

The Hangover: Part II  (May 26, 2011)

This movie has some big shoes to fill as the original Hangover was a surprise mega hit back in 2008.  The entire crazy gang is back to create more mayhem in this sequel that is bound to be a huge hit or a bad case of a “been there, done that.”

Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom (May 27, 2011)

The big, chubby Panda Kung-Fu martial artist returns for more crazy fun.  This animated adventure stars the voices of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Gary Oldman and Jean-Claude Van Damme.

X-Men: First Class (June 3, 2011)

Professor X forms a school for mutants and becomes a mortal enemy of Magneto in this prequel to the series.  James McAvoy plays the future professor.

Cars 2: World Grand Prix (June 24, 2011)

Owen Wilson stars as the voice of Lightning McQueen who with Mater the incredible tow truck, (voice of Larry the Cable Guy) take on the World Grand Prix.  The journey isn’t going to be easy—lots of pit stops, detours and hilarious shenanigans along the way will make this Pixar film a sure fire summer kid favorite.

Transformers: Dark of The Moon (July 1, 2011)

Shia La Beouf, Tyrese Gibson, John Malkovich, Frances McDormand and Ken Jeong star in this latest installment of this action packed and very noisy movie franchise.  Shia La Beouf and his giant robots discover all sorts of crazy stuff going on over there on the dark side of the moon.

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part II (July 15, 2011)

This is the final installment of this film franchise-one of the most popular and lucrative of all time.  Even though we will be sad to see an end to Harry Potter and his Hogwort associates, this finale is bound to be a huge hit as well as a sentimental favorite this summer.  Harry and the gang try to find Voldemort’s horcruxes and Voldemort himself and destroy them once and for all in what is bound to be all out war.

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes (August 5, 2011)

This ancient franchise has been exhumed again for a new generation to behold.  The setting is modern-day San Francisco and there is an epic battle between the now intelligent apes created by modern scientists and man. The film stars James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow and starring as the big ape, Andy Serkis.

Spy Kids 4:  All The Time In The World (August 19, 2011)

The fourth installment of the hit movie franchise, Spy Kids 4 is set to be released in some theatres in 3D.   Jessica Alba stars as a retired secret agent who is now a wife and mother.  She is called back into action when a crazy Timekeeper threatens to take over the planet.

Final Destination 5 (August 26, 2011)

You can’t beat death…or can you?  We thought the final destination had been reached after the first film but apparently there is enough ways to beat up, mangle and hack up doomed teenagers to inspire this 5th film in the series.

Spring Break 2011!

Spring Break

Spring Break

March is the month when the college spring breakers are off and running…to the beach!  Even though the spring break destinations for sun and fun are endless, many of the twenty something year olds head to the ”Sunshine State” of Florida – Daytona, Panama City, Ft Lauderdale, Ft Myers and Miami are just a few of the beaches bombarded with these crazy kids looking to relax and have fun after midterms!

April is the month for the high school seniors to hit the beaches and for families to get away for a week.  I like the fact that the colleges go earlier in the year than the family spring breakers.  It’s better for everyone involved!  Spring break is enjoyed by every age; toddlers, kids, tweens, teens and parents alike.  It’s the first break of the year from school and believe me the kids are more than ready!

If you’re planning to go away for spring break this year, enjoy yourselves and be safe.  If your plans involve staying home (between gas prices and the economy, I don’t blame you), there are plenty of activities to keep your kids busy and to keep from hearing those words every parent dreads, “I’m bored!”

Here are some ideas for you “stay at home” spring breakers!

  • Camp Out – throw a tent out in the backyard, light up a bonfire, roast some marshmallows and don’t forget the scary ghost stories.
  • Picnics - plan a day where you can pack up a lunch and go exploring.  Local parks have picnic tables and lots to do for the kids!
  • Biking, Fishing, Hiking – pack up the car with your bikes, rollerblades and fishing gear and make a day of it!
  • Costume Party – have all the neighborhood kids over for a huge costume party.  Make a theme or let it be a free for all – wear whatever costume you want party!

The week of spring break can be fun whether you’re swimming, skiing or staying home!  Do a little planning ahead of time and make this family spring break one your kids will enjoy!!
