Tom Smith Christmas Crackers

When I first heard of Tom Smith Christmas Crackers I thought they were some type of festive holiday appetizer.  I had no idea that they are actually a fun party favor that have been an important British tradition for years and is now becoming a booming tradition here in America.

The Christmas cracker was invented in 1847 by Tom Smith, a baker of wedding cakes from Clerkenwell, London.  On a trip to Paris in 1840 Smith discovered the “bon-bon”, a sugared almond wrapped in a twist of paper.  Back in London, his new sweets became quite popular.  When he noticed that young men were buying them for their sweethearts he began to place love mottoes on small slips of paper inside the wrapping.  In 1846, standing at his fireplace, the crackle of a log gave him the flash of inspiration for the cracker.  After much experimentation, he got it right.  He pasted small strips of saltpetre to two strips of thin card.  As the cards were pulled away from each other, the friction created a crack and a spark (similar to that used in a cap gun).  A cracker consists of a cardboard tube wrapped in a brightly decorated twist of paper, making it resemble an oversized sweet-wrapper.  The cracker is pulled by two people, and much in the manner of a wishbone, the cracker splits unevenly.  The split is accompanied by a small bang.  Inside the cracker is typically a small toy or other trinket and a motto, a joke or piece of trivia on a small strip of paper.

My family loves these Christmas Crackers!  The kids can’t wait to pull them apart and see what type of goodies are inside.  At HalloweenExpress.com they have every possible type of Cracker you will need to start your own special tradition with your family this year.  From luxury and specialty crackers to traditional and juvenile (for the kids).  They even have “mini” sized crackers!  There’s a Christmas Cracker for every occasion for your holiday season!

It’s a Hawaiian Luau!

Have you ever wanted to go to a Hawaiian Luau but never got the chance?  Well now you can bring an authentic Hawaiian Luau right to your own home!  For a theme party event, the Hawaiian Luau is by far the most popular.  You have so much to pick from in the way of costumes, accessories and makeup.

For the people who live in the Hawaiian Islands a luau is a gathering of family and friends to enjoy good food, good company and good times.  The luau should be relaxing and fun with a “hang loose” atmosphere.

At HalloweenExpress.com we have everything you need for the perfect Hawaiian Luau.  Of course the most important thing is your attire.

The hula skirt comes in different colors:

Halloween 2008, 2009, 2010 – It’s Party Time!

Last year Halloween fell on a Wednesday which only gave us the weekend before Halloween to throw parties and costume contests.  However the next three years will be great for the Halloween holiday!  This year Halloween falls on a Friday, in 2009 it’s on Saturday and in 2010 it’s Sunday.  Wow that will give all the party goers and costume wearers plenty of time to have fun, celebrate and enjoy all the great things the Halloween holiday has to offer.

Just think, for the next three years you’ll get a lot more wear out of your costume!  Not only will you have the weekend before Halloween to show off your costume at party’s, nightclubs, masquerade balls and the such, but you’ll have the weekend of Halloween to do the same.  So that gives you plenty of time to prance around in whatever amazing costume or costumes you come up with this year, next year and the year after that!

Speaking of costumes I’m thinking about going humorous this year.  There are so many funny costumes to choose from here at Halloween Express.  Just looking at some of them you can’t help but laugh.  If you’re a serious person by nature then the best costume for you at Halloween would definitely be something funny.  It completely throws everybody else off guard and shows you have a funny side too.

Here are just a few of my favorite “funny” costumes:

Martini Glass

Aloha Gorilla

Beer Keg

Baby In A Highchair

So if you want to be the life of the party and make people laugh (but remember they’ll be laughing at you not with you), be sure to dress humorous this Halloween.  Check out all the funny adult costumes Halloween Express has to offer and order one today!

It Only Takes a Costume To Become a Superhero!

My son Caden turned nine last Wednesday so we had a big birthday party for him at our house on Saturday.  I let Cade pick out the theme for his party and he decided on “Superheroes”.  With the Batman movie The Dark Knight being released Friday he already knew that’s exactly who he wanted to be.  So Friday night my husband and I took him to see the movie (with everybody else in the free world).  It was packed but honestly it was really cool because everybody in the theater was cheering on Batman so Cade really got into it.  By the way, the movie was (as Cade would say) AWESOME!  I was looking forward to it because I liked Batman Returns, but I had no idea it would be as good as it was.  In my blog earlier that day I said that a lot of reviews had Heath Ledger earning an oscar for his role as Joker and now that I’ve seen the movie, I wholeheartedly agree with it!  He was amazing.  You would have never guessed it was Heath Ledger playing the part.  Nothing in the Joker’s character would have given it away.  Anyway, if you haven’t seen the movie you should!

Back to the party…  Caden made a very handsome Batman (if I do say so myself) and what was so neat was that every one of his friends came as a Superhero of some sort.  Thankfully Caden was the only Batman, but we did have Superman, Spiderman, The Green Flash, Captain America, Zorro, a few of the Power Rangers, The Incredible Hulk plus a couple Ninja Turtles thrown in for good measure.  The kids loved it!  They were on a sugar high all day, running around with masks on and capes flying.

If you need an idea for a theme party for your child’s birthday, then you have to throw a “Superhero” party.  Believe me your child and their friends will have so much fun and it will be a party they won’t soon forget!  Check out our kids Superhero costume page here at Halloween Express and let your kids decide which Superhero they want to be for the day!

Fourth of July – Show Your Patriotic Spirit

Friday, June 20 was the first “official” day of summer and all the swimming pools and picnics are in full swing!  Speaking of picnics, the July 4th weekend is just 11 days away and that’s definitely one of the biggest weekends of the summer for a party with family and friends.

We always have the Fourth of July party at our house and I love planning and getting everything together for it.  It’s probably one of my favorite holidays because there is always so much to do.  Picnics, parades and fireworks are just a few things to look forward to on July 4th.  If you’re planning on throwing a party you should start planning now so that you’re not pulling your hair out trying to get everything done at the last minute.

If you’re planning on having it outside then put some colorful flower pots around to give your yard a little color.  My kids love to decorate the yard with those small plastic flags and anything they can get their hands on that’s red, white and blue.  Since it is the middle of summer and usually pretty hot by now, make sure you have plenty of shade for your friends and family to enjoy (sitting outside sweating up a storm is not very enjoyable).  If you don’t have an awning or covered deck just put some umbrella tables around the yard.  I always borrow a couple from my family and neighbors!

A great way to show your patriotc spirit is to get one of our great costumes from Halloween Express.  From Uncle Sam and The Statue of Liberty costumes to plastic flags and aprons, we have everything you need to make your Fourth of July celebration a weekend to remember.

Like a lot of neighborhoods, ours always has a big firework display that evening.  It’s a perfect ending to a great Fourth of July party with family and friends!
