Mardi Gras: Fast Facts About Fat Tuesday

Mardi Gras 2013

Mardi Gras aka Fat Tuesday is celebrated this year on Tuesday February 12, 2013.  You don’t have to live in New Orleans to really get into the whole eating, drinking and being merry thing that has become a huge part of the Mardi Gras fun.   Don’t know much about Mardi Gras?  Here is our list of quick facts about the ultimate party known officially as Mardi Gras!

  1. Celebrating Mardi Gras is not a modern day invention.  The tradition of Mardi Gras (also called Fat Tuesday) actually began long ago; it stems from a medieval practice including some pretty heavy chowing down prior to the advent of lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday.  Traditionally, Mardi Gras is considered to be the last day for Catholics to really get into some heavy feasting before the fasting and giving up of certain foods during lent.
  2. Although a lot of the big hoopla occurs on Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras celebrating often goes on for weeks prior to the actual event, in many cases the parades and parties begin in early January around the time of Epiphany.  Now that’s a party!
  3. Mardi Gras is most infamously associated with New Orleans, but the holiday is actually celebrated throughout the world.
  4. Mardi Gras is known as Pancake Day in England, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand…and yes, they do eat pancakes as part of their celebrating!
  5. Where’s the baby?  The traditional wreath-shaped King’s Cake has a plastic baby baked right into it.  It is said that whoever gets the slice of cake holding the plastic baby will have good luck and fortune for the entire year!
  6. Parades!  A huge part of Mardi Gras traditional celebrating revolves around numerous parades.  Elaborate floats are part of these parades and those that ride on the floats will traditionally throw out beaded necklaces as well as various trinkets to parade onlookers.
  7. The Mardi Gras official colors are known to be purple, gold and green.  Green is said to symbolize faith, gold symbolizes power, and purple represents justice.  Although many different colors of beads are tossed out during Mardi Gras celebrating, obtaining the ones that represent the official colors of Mardi Gras is considered good luck–except the beads that have already fallen to the ground, which are considered to be bad luck.
  8. The tradition of throwing beads to parade onlookers actually began back in the 1900’s when a dressed up Santa Claus riding on a float began tossing out beaded necklaces to parade watchers. (And no, the spectators were not flashing Santa!) The tossing of beaded necklaces is one of the most popular of all Mardi Gras traditions to this day.
  9. Mardi Gras draws fun-seekers everywhere, particularly in New Orleans where Mardi Gras celebrating is done on a very grand scale.  During Mardi Gras, masked balls, parties, parades and lots of general partying are commonplace.
  10. The tradition of masked balls during Mardi Gras began in the 1700’s. People were so raucous, rowdy and debaucherous during the extreme revelry of Mardi Gras that they took to wearing masks in order to conceal their real identities to avoid any future ramifications from their night of utter craziness.  At one point in the 19th century there was so much drunk and disorderly conduct occurring during the time of Mardi Gras that authorities made the wearing of masks illegal, hoping to curtail some of the shenanigans.  People were not at all deterred by the new mask-less regulations and the extreme behavior continued anyway.

Mardi Gras celebrations are a long time tradition that is enjoyed to this day by the masses.  Whether you are heading to New Orleans to get your own piece of the Mardi Gras action or are simply hosting a Mardi Gras celebration of your own close to home, you will not want to miss out on what appears to be the perfect excuse to have a really good time.  Don’t forget to check out our complete selection of Mardi Gras supplies, costumes and accessories to make your Mardi Gras inspired event nothing short of spectacular!

Your Best Costumes Looks . . . Unmasked!

If you have kids you know what we mean, the mask part of the costume sometimes only lasts mere minutes.

If you have kids you know what we mean, the mask part of the costume sometimes only lasts mere minutes.

We all know the story.  You buy this incredible costume that comes with an amazing mask that easily gets you into your chosen character, right down to every subtle little detail.  The problem is, after about 10 minutes of wearing that wonderful costume mask, it sometimes gets a little clammy inside…kinda sweaty…and occasionally, it can be downright uncomfortable.  Then there’s always the social aspect–it’s kind of hard to chat with people or really get your party on with your face totally shrouded in latex.  Don’t get us wrong–we do love masks and they are often a very easy as well as dramatic solution for a truly amazing look–but, seriously, sometimes they are just a pain.  If you have kids you know what we mean, the mask part of the costume sometimes only lasts mere minutes.

Make the most of your Halloween costume (and put your best face forward, too) by trying out some of these easy makeup techniques that will put you straight into character and keep you there all night long!

Halloween Masks: Putting Your Best Face Forward

It’s been Mom’s advice to kids of all ages for years, right?  Put your best face forward and try to make a good first impression.  That’s solid advice from good ol’ Mom and we’re sure that she’d be in full agreement that it even applies to Halloween, right?  Certainly we’re all about making good first impressions, and your Halloween costume is the perfect chance to do just that.  First impressions do count, and with the addition of an appropriate Halloween mask, your costume and the impression it creates amongst your friends and cohorts this Halloween is apt to be quite memorable.

Zombie looks are hot, hot, hot right now with these creatures being featured both in cable TV programming and in new feature films soon to be released.  In AMC’s “The Walking Dead” the storyline basically tells the tale of Sherriff Rick Grimes who after weeks in a coma, wakes up to discover that the world he used to know is gone and has now been overtaken by a Zombie epidemic!  What could be more awesome!  World War Z (to be released later in 2011) is another Zombie thriller starring Brad Pitt that has also sparked a lot of excitement and renewed interest in the whole idea of these “come back from the dead” characters.  A detailed and truly horrific Zombie mask, such as our Zombie tongue mask is going to create a face that truly looks like something from beyond the grave.

Feeling lazy?  “Today I don’t feel like doing anything!”  If that is your mantra, you may need the perfect mask to wear while you express this sentiment.  Our officially licensed Chimp mask is just like the one worn in the Bruno Mars music video and is also the perfect solution when you just feel like “not doing anything” except for monkeying around, of course.  This Chimp mask is hilarious and yet oddly adorable, too.  Perfect for group dress up or on it’s own, this mask has great costume potential for many different looks.

Another piece of motherly advice that you may have been given at some point was to generally avoid the topics of religion and politics during social settings.  These subjects can be hot buttons for many and you do have to be aware of your social group and how they are going to react when topics like this are brought to light.  Our collection of political masks, albeit controversial, is going to get some animated conversation started at your next Halloween function.  Tread lightly, brave ones but if you are going for a big political statement, go all out with our Osama Bin Laden Missile Head Mask or our Gaddafi Mask.  We also have some lighthearted versions of the President and the First Lady as well as a mask of the ever-present Sarah Palin.

Put your best face forward this Halloween with one of our detailed, realistic and fabulous masks!  Mom would be proud.

Scream4

Today, April 15th marks the release of the 4th movie in Wes Craven’s Scream series.  If the first trilogy made the hair on the back of your neck stand up, Scream 4 is bound to do the same.   With most of the old characters back as well as some new, younger faces, this movie will take you right into the heart of darkness and redefine what fear is. This latest chapter in the Scream series is out just in time for a good Spring Break scare.   After you’ve seen Scream 4, check out our list of the Top Ten Scariest Movies of all time.

TOP 10 SCARIEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME

Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)- This classic horror flick gets started with the ominous line “based on true story” which pretty much makes a chill go down your spine every time.  Whether it’s Leatherman’s human skin mask or that hideous chain saw sound—this is the perfect slasher movie for those that aren’t afraid to be scared or grossed out to death.

The Ring (2002)- Naomi Watts takes on some really freaky chick that would actually really like to climb out of a well, kill people and eat their guts.  Freaky Stuff.

Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1978) -This sci-fi thriller will leave you very disappointed if you like happy endings.  If your family starts acting strangely it may make you wonder a bit, too.

Dawn Of The Dead (1978)- This sequel to the “Night of the Living Dead” brought new life to the zombie genre and with good reason.  This horror flick has some of the goriest scenes ever recorded on film—definitely horrific enough to get it banned in 7 countries.

Halloween (1978) -Jamie Lee Curtis stars in what might be the best movie she ever made–at least while screaming through the entire thing.    You will never forget Michael Myers as he truly epitomizes the ultimate zombie-like never can die bogeyman.

The Shining (1980)-Heeeeere’s Johnny!  If you want to see Jack Nicholson traipse around a haunted hotel wielding an axe while acting like a complete lunatic this might be the perfect movie to scare the bejesus out of you.

The Exorcist (1973)-By today’s standards this movie might be considered to be tame.  With spinning heads, buckets of vomit and not so subtle religious undertones—well, this film is still pretty scary stuff.

The Silence of The Lambs (1991)- You may not ever feel the same about your glass of Chianti after watching this psychological thriller but it’s a good one with quite a few jump right out of your skin scenes.

Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)-Freddy Kruegger, who is one of the scariest claw clad horror freaks of all time goes after the children of the lynch mob that killed him.  Johnny Depp stars as one of his potential victims.

The Amityville Horror (1978) -This horror movie is also based on a true story and the book by the same name.  An ordinary family moves into a not so ordinary house where some very frightening things begin to happen.  If you like movies where things go bump in the night—this ones for you.
