Friday the 13th – Do You Have “Paraskavedekatriaphobia”?

Friday the 13th – feeling lucky today?  Did you know that today is the only Friday of the whole year that the thirteenth falls on.  If you’re superstitious then you’re probably on full-alert today!  Here is a little “fyi” for you; the fear of Friday the 13th is called “paraskavedekatriaphobia”, a specialized form of triskaidekaphobia, which is a fear of the number thirteen.

The dictionary defines the word superstition as, “an irrational fear of what is unknown or mysterious”.  Although it may be defined as irrational, I’m sure many people would disagree.  Some sources say that Friday the 13th may be the most widespread superstition in the United States.  Many people avoid travel, avoid signing contracts, some won’t go to work or eat in restaurants and some people won’t even get out of bed.  And it’s not just people that are superstitious, the business world is  as well.  Many tall buildings don’t have a 13th floor and some airlines don’t have a row 13, they skip straight from 12 to 14.   Many Christians have long believed that Friday was unlucky because it was the day of the week when Jesus was crusified and the number 13 was believed to bring bad luck because there were 13 people at The Last Supper with the 13th guest being Judas, the traitor.

Besides the more popular superstitions you hear everyday such as; walking under a ladder, breaking a mirror and opening an umbrella indoors - here are some bad luck superstitions that I had never heard of:

  • a bat flying into your house
  • three butterflies together
  • hearing a rooster crow at night
  • spilling salt
  • crossing knives at a table
  • sitting on a table without one foot touching the ground
  • breaking a glass while proposing a toast
  • seeing an owl during daylight hours

I think everyone has seen the character “Jason” from the slasher films Friday the 13th out trick-or-treating on Halloween night.  Every year I see at least one, if not more Jason’s running around in our neighborhood wearing the trademark white hockey mask.  This popular horror film franchise has been around since the original movie came out in May 1980.  Since then 11 sequels have been released with the latest being “Jason vs Freddy” in 2003.  However, there’s great news if you’re a Friday the 13th movie fan!  A remake of the original Friday the 13th film is scheduled for release Friday, February 13, 2009.

Are You Ready For “Prom Night”?

It’s that time of year again when all the junior and senior’s in high school are getting ready for their Prom.  The girls are out looking for that perfect dress and the guys are renting out the coolest tuxedo’s.  Was it a coincidence then that the scary movie “Prom Night” just happened to be released now?  I think not!  Of course the movie makers knew exactly what they were doing.  That’s why the teen slasher movie was number one at the box office this weekend.

It’s a remake of a 1980 horror film staring Jamie Lee Curtis in which teens are killed by a professor turned stalker during the high school prom.  Here’s a little fyi about the movie - It’s about a young girl named Donna Keppel who’s family was killed by a psychopath teacher (that was obsessed with her) three years earlier.  As the story goes, Donna survived the attack by hiding and then testified against the teacher putting him in a maximum security asylum for the criminally insane for life.  He escapes and stalks her and her friends on what is supposed to be the best night of her life – prom night.

I’m telling you, I must be getting old because if I were to see this movie before going to my prom – I would not have gone!  Or at the least I would have been looking over my shoulder all night long!  Apparently it doesn’t seem to bother kids today because a lot of them went to see the movie.  I guess “the scarier the better” holds true in this case.

For all of you young girls that haven’t seen this movie yet and are looking forward to their prom, here’s my advice:  Go and have a great time at your prom, then go see the movie!

Summer Blockbuster Movies

If your children are like mine, they base their Halloween costume on whatever character catches their fancy over the summer.  Last year a few of them were Hannah Montana, The Simpsons, Shrek the Third, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean and Spider Man 3.  As we all know, huge trends for Halloween costumes are geared toward characters from movies that are released over the summer.  Here are just a few of the big summer blockbuster movies being released this year that will definitely be huge costume sellers at Halloween Express over the coming months:

Iron Man – “Heroes Aren’t Born – They’re Made”

Speed Racer – “Go, Speed Racer, Go”

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian – “A New Age Has Begun”

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – “The Adventure Continues”

Kung Fu Panda – “Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting”

Hellboy II: The Golden Army – “Humanity’s Only Hope”

The Dark Knight – “Gotham Needs You”

Horton Hears a Who – “One Elephant, One World, One Story”

The Incredible Hulk – “Our Only Hope is Something Incredible”

Horror Film Series – Saw

The horror movie “Saw IV” was released yesterday just in time for Halloween.  It’s the fourth installment in the popular Saw horror film series.  The fourth film’s release date follows the series tradition that the films be released the Friday before Halloween of each year. Like all good horror films it’s full of suspense and plenty of blood and gore. This installment continues the story of the John Kramer (aka: Jigsaw Killer), and his obsession with teaching people the value of their own lives. My nephew and his friends went to see it as soon as they got out of school yesterday and loved it.  The initial reviews for Saw IV have been really good:

  • will please any fan of the franchise
  • has everything you’d ever want from a Saw film
  • will really bring it full circle
  • best of the lot
  • gory and twisted

Previously released Saw movies:

  • Saw – released 2004
  • Saw II – released 2005
  • Saw III – released 2006

There is said to be two more installments (Saw V & VI) of the Saw horror series in the works.  I’m sure my nephews will be glad to hear about that!

Well, off the subject of movies and onto the fun subject of Halloween Party’s!  I’m sure many people will be getting their costumes on tonight and going out to parties and the clubs.  If you’re planning on entering a costume contest – good luck!  I’m sure if you’re wearing one of our wonderful costumes you’ll be holding that 1st place prize before the nights over.  Have fun and remember to be safe!

Grease is one of my all time favorite movies!  Who can forget Rydell High with Danny, Sandy, Rizzo, Kenickie, Frenchy, The T-Birds and The Pink Ladies?  The movie was released in June 1978 and is still wildly popular today.  I don’t think there’s a song in that movie that most people don’t know every word to.  Even my children love it!  With our line of Grease costumes now you go back to the days of poodle skirts and saddle shoes.  Check out all our Grease costumes at Grease Halloween Costumes.  Grease is the word!

The Lord of the Rings is a blockbuster trilogy consisting of:

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

The films were critically acclaimed, winning an unbelievable 17 Academy Awards.  My nephews love this trilogy and have seen them over and over again.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve played Lord of the Rings Monopoly with them!  The characters in the movie are so well known that when you dress as one for Halloween everyone knows what character you are.  Gandolf, Frodo, Aragorn, Legolas, Queen Arwen and even the lovely Gollum are some of the costumes you can choose from.  See our entire line of The Lord of the Rings costumes at  Lord of the Rings Halloween Costumes.

As far as children and Nickelodeon go, there’s no better match.  Children love Nickelodeon and all the characters that come with it.  So when it comes to picking out their costumes many children want to be the characters that are in the Nickelodeon shows they like.  Sponge Bob (which I happen to know is not just a childs favorite – many adults love Sponge Bob) and his friend Patrick, Blues Clues, Dora the Explorer and her brother Diego are all shows that children love to watch.  For all our Nickelodeon favorite costumes go to  Nickelodeon Halloween Costumes.

Remember there’s still time to shop, order and receive your costume from Halloween Express.  Get shopping now and make this Halloween a night to remember!
