Tim Burton’s “Frankenweenie” Comes Alive

Tim Burton's Frankenweenie

Just in time for Halloween, Tim Burton has once again gifted the world with his ultra creepy magic.  Based on his 1984 short film classic, Frankenweenie has been revamped into a full-length stop-motion animated feature film that is sure to delight audiences everywhere this fall.

The 2012 version of the Frankenweenie story is essentially the same as it was in 1984 with a few surprises built into the tale that truly make this new morphing a full-blown monster-studded mash.  At the core of the tale is Victor Frankenstein, a misunderstood outsider who feels little connection with anyone in the world aside from his beloved pooch, Sparky who he spends most of his time with.  Victor and Sparky absolutely embody the Tim Burton-ized version of the love that exists between a boy and his dog.

One tragic day, Sparky is hit by a car and killed.  Victor has lost his best friend, perhaps his only friend, and is totally devastated by the loss.  His mother, in her efforts to console Victor, reminds him that Sparky will always live on in his heart.  Victor, however, finds little consolation in this notion and wants his dog to live with him in the here and now!  Inspired by his Science teacher, Mr. Rzykruski, Victor hatches a plan based on science to attempt to revive his beloved pet.  Victor digs up Sparky, sneaks his body up to the attic and sets up an elaborate scientific protocol that he hopes will add some spark to his ol’ pooch Sparky.  A few well-timed bolts of lightening later, the Tim Burton magic begins as this film comes to hilarious life with all sorts of monstrous shenanigans to soon follow.

As nearby children in the town hear of Victor’s success in bringing Sparky back to life, other kids start using the same procedure with some pretty creepy and hilarious results as they attempt to bring their own deceased pets back to life as well.  The quiet town will never be the same as the reincarnated pets are now unleashed all over the place with some pretty doggone funny results occurring in the process!

Representing the collaborative efforts of Disney and Tim Burton, Frankenweenie is an absolutely not to be missed film for your entire family, and is the perfect way to kick off your Halloween celebrating.  Frankenweenie will be in theaters October 5, 2012.  Looking for more Tim Burton Halloween inspiration?  Check out our how-to video featuring another one of Mr. Burton’s all time greatest film characters, Edward Scissorhands.  He’s dark, gothic and even a little bit weird–but oh so much fun!!

The Best Movie One-Liner’s Ever (Some Fabulous Costume Ideas Too!)

Terminator Costume Masks

Terminator Costume Masks

From the earliest days of silent films to the more modern film masterpieces that today thrill audiences everywhere, movies have definitely become a huge part of the cultural fabric of American society.  Many movies are so infamous that they are known by one simple line from the script–these catchphrases have become a huge part of American vernacular with multiple meanings as well as associations.  As you get ready to get into your favorite movie character this Halloween, keep some of these more infamous movie lines (and the characters that go with them) in mind!  Here’s a list of some of our faves:

I’ll Be Back.  (The Terminator)-Today you can put on your best tough guy imitation and use this line to say you are soon returning, with an “attitude” of course!

Frankly, My Dear, I don’t give a damn.  (Gone With The Wind)-In today’s terms, this phrase is a very useful way to show complete indifference after you’ve “had it up to here”…particularly effective spewed right before heading into the man cave.

The Name is Bond, James Bond.  (James Bond Franchise)  Just feeling sexy and you know it? This phrase can be pretty funny if timed just right.  If you take it too seriously, however, you might fall flat on your noggin’ and just look like an idiot.

Life is Like a Box of Chocolates. (Forest Gump)-This phrase means basically that you never know what life is going to throw at you–some of life’s surprises are good, others not so much.

Houston, We Have a Problem.  (Apollo 13)- A universal phrase that now means, “Uh-oh, we’ve got big trouble…!!”  You’ve said it, I’ve said it, okay–we’ve all said it.

May the Force be with you.  (Star Wars) -This is sort of a sci-fi-ish way of expressing a similar sentiment to “May God be with you”.

Show Me the Money!  (Jerry Maguire)-Exactly what it says, essentially “put your money where your mouth is” or let the “money do the talking!”  This is useful in so many fiscally oriented situations!

I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse.  (The Godfather) Hmmm, sort of a threat guised in false sincerity, but we definitely get the point.

Toto, I’ve got a feeling were not in Kansas anymore.  (The Wizard of Oz)  This essentially states that something big is going down that is really out of the norm.

If you build it, they will come.  (Field of Dreams)  Basically it means the same thing as believe in yourself and trust your instincts; good things will happen.

Why so serious?  (The Dark Knight)  The Joker’s infamous line is still useful in situations that may require a little release valve for lots of built-up tension.

Go ahead, make my day.  (Sudden Impact)  Still being used today, this infamous line almost taunts as it challenges.

Here’s Johnny! (The Shining) Obviously this infamous line was originally swiped from the Johnny Carson show, but Jack Nicholson’s version is now useful for any surprise entrance.

Elementary, my dear Watson.  (Sherlock Holmes)  Nowadays, this is the same thing as saying “this is going to be really easy!”

They’re Here! (Poltergeist)  Getting the willies or the heebie jeebies?  Are the hairs on the back of your neck, standing straight up?  This famous line pretty much says it all.

Yo Adrian! (Rocky) A very Philadelphia, boxer-style greeting that most anyone gets warm and fuzzy over.

Welcome to the Hotel Transylvania!

Hotel Transylvania is the perfect place for monsters to go to just be monsters without any interference or having to deal with the human world whatsoever.

Hotel Transylvania is the perfect place for monsters to go to just be monsters without any interference or having to deal with the human world whatsoever.

If you were thinking that just because summer is officially now over that everything in the movie theater is going to be boo-ring, well you would be horrifically wrong.  Just in time to put you into the mood for Halloween and all the creatures that go with it, an animated monster movie is set to hit the theatres.  This film looks like great family entertainment and is perfect for all age groups!

Welcome to the Hotel Transylvania.  It’s a lovely and quite schwanky place, hidden away from the human world by its owner, Count Dracula, of course.  Hotel Transylvania is the perfect place for monsters to go to just be monsters without any interference or having to deal with the human world whatsoever.  Tucked away nicely in a place where humans don’t go, the Hotel Transylvania has quickly become the favorite tourist destination of frightful beings everywhere.

Count Dracula is quite astute at running his 5-fang resort and does so without a hitch.  Planning a big event is a no brainer for the clever and enigmatic Count as well, and he does so easily, inviting all the big name monsters to his resort to celebrate his daughter Mavis’ 118th birthday.  All the monster heavy hitters are going to be there–Frankenstein, his wife The Mummy, a pack of Werewolves, The Invisible Man and many more.  This should be the monster mash of all monster mashes and still the Count is taking it all in stride…that is, until something happens that makes his blood, quite simply, run cold.

With the Hotel Transylvania absolutely brimming with big time monsters doing their thing, someone clearly uninvited happens to wander into the place and in the process creates sort of a ruckus.  It’s a human!  To make matters even worse, this human that has accidentally stumbled on the Hotel Transylvania is a very radi-cool teenage boy that pretty much instantaneously becomes entranced with the Count’s lovely daughter, Mavis.  Uh-oh…now some serious trouble breweth.

The Count, by his own admission, is likely the most over-protective father in all of monsterville.  Seeing his daughter take a fancy to a human is his own worst nightmare.  Watch the Count and his groovy ghoulie monster friends enter into some pretty silly shenanigans as they deal with this vigilant monster dad’s worst-case scenario.  Hotel Transylvania features the voices of Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James, Fran Drescher and David Spade.  This film has some pretty hilarious versions of all your favorite monster characters–just in time for the final countdown into Halloween!  Don’t miss Hotel Transylvania, in theatres September 28!

Exciting August Movie Fun You Won’t Want to Miss!

The Expendables 2

With today being August 1st, we thought we’d take a look at a couple of the movies slated to be released in August that look to be a lot of fun.

The Expendables 2

This action adventure film starring a whole plethora of action hero favorites (Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris & Liam Hemsworth) is set to hit the theatres August 17, 2012.  Just the casting alone leaves one wide-eyed at the possibilities for all kinds of high-speed mayhem and lots of insane exploding pyrotechnics.  Not a moving to doze through, this film promises to be a bona-fide testosterone-fest for those who love action–with a noble cause at its root, of course.

The Expendables, a group of elite and talented mercenaries, have been reunited to take on another mission set up by the quite mysterious Mr. Church.  This job should have been a fairly routine one for this rogue bunch, but when one of their own men is murdered, this sets the scene for a plot of revenge and ultimate payback.  In spite of the best-laid plans, the Expendables find themselves deep in enemy territory and perhaps are even in way in over their heads.  For action and adventure that just won’t quit, plus a cast of characters that is fully capable of blowing your mind, don’t miss The Expendables 2!

Easy Costume Idea:  Want to re-create one of these action filled looks for your Halloween costume, but don’t know where to start?  Try some of our military law enforcement gear as a base for your costume look or use a dark color t-shirt and cargo pants.  Add lots of accessories–bullet belts, plastic knives, martial arts implements and perhaps even our “Che Beret with Hair” which will add some interesting military-inspired panache to your ultimate tough guy look!

The Odd Life Of Timothy Green

It looks like Disney may have done it again.  The Odd Life of Timothy Green hits theatres on August 15, 2012 and from what we’ve seen, this movie is sure to be a sentimental favorite for families as well as kids of all ages.  The plot surrounds a young couple living in a small town, Cindy and Jim Green, who suddenly must face the heartbreaking reality that they are incapable of ever bearing their own children.  One night in an effort to assuage some of their grief, the couple writes down all the qualities of their dream son and buries the slips of paper in a box placed deep in the ground.  To their surprise and utter amazement, from the box of buried dreams, grows a child with some pretty amazing qualities and characteristics.

Easy Costume Idea: Feeling creative and want to create a Timothy Green look of your very own?  This original look can easily be captured by using a flesh colored body suit and attaching silk leaves and other green foliage, all which are easily obtained from your local craft store.  Try on the body suit and using a water-soluble marker lightly dot the suit in a pattern where you want your foliage to “grow”.  You can buy leafy vines and drape them around the body suit, or plan to attach individual leaves in various locations. Take the body suit off after you have it marked with the locations you want to apply the greenery.  Using hot glue, (or alternatively, you can sew the leaves on the suit), attach the leaves and/or vines to the body suit.  Use your imagination and have fun with the look.  Make your Timothy as “green” as you like!

Don’t miss these fun and fabulous films and keep them in mind as inspiration for some truly amazing costume ideas

ParaNorman: Can Just Being Norman Stop a Zombie Invasion?

ParaNorman

Who’s Norman?  Norman is your average everyday “normal” kid, with average everyday “normal” kid problems.  Well, sorta.  Norman is a bit of an outsider at school, is definitely not at all popular, he get’s beat up regularly, and definitely is most comfortable being a loner.  These qualities in Norman however, are the most regular and ordinary parts about him.  What really sets Norman apart from all the other kids is his apparent ability to see and communicate with dead people…aka ghosts.  Talking with and seeing ghosts is all part of everyday “Norman” life, but it doesn’t do much to help him fit in with others and only deepens the ever-growing chasm between him and the other kids at Blithe Hollow Middle School.

Toss in a Weird Uncle:  As if things weren’t bad enough for Norman and his very abysmal social life; he also has a very weird and bizarre outcast uncle.  Although some efforts have been made to keep Norman from the truly strange and somewhat crazy Mr. Prenderghast (likely because of the eerie similarities they have personality-wise), Norman does eventually connect with him, only to get some startling information from him.

Norman is your average everyday “normal” kid, with average everyday “normal” kid problems.

Zombie Invasion!  An ancient curse cast by a witch is going to create imminent disaster in Norman’s town, as a centuries old spell will cause all the town’s dead to return to life at sundown!  This event suddenly thrusts quiet Norman into the limelight, his special skills and abilities being exactly what’s needed to deal with the approaching zombie invasion!  Suddenly Norman has the opportunity to be the town’s biggest hero of all, but he only has until sunset to do it!  Can the most abnormal freak in town stop this zombie invasion?

Animation Masterpiece.  ParaNorman is a stop-motion animated film.  Each character is created in puppet form and then in order to animate the character; a small movement is made after which a picture is taken.  Another small movement is made, and then another picture is taken.  The process is extremely time-consuming, but this is the way each character is brought to life.  The average animator working on the film was able to create only about 5-8 seconds of film per week!  The zombie-awakening scene alone took well over one year to animate.

ParaNorman hits theatres August 17, just as summer begins to wind down and your Halloween season starts to wind up!  Don’t miss this thrilling animated Paranorman adventure!
