Horrible Hannibal

Horribal Hannibal

Horribal Hannibal

Around these parts, it’s kinda hard to find a monster that really stands up and gets our attention.  We’ve seen them all.  Yes, through the years we’ve seen some pretty gnarly characters that have been unbelievably scary.  There is one guy, however, who likely has sent more than one utterly ice-cold shiver down your spine.  His name is Hannibal Lecter.  This past week on NBC, Hannibal Lecter returned to the screen to thrill and terrify audiences once again, this time in a new television series entitled Hannibal.  Made by Brian Fuller, Hannibal takes the audience back to the early days when Dr. Hannibal Lecter was still a practicing psychiatrist and was working with FBI agent Will Graham, tracking serial killers.   The relationship will evolve a great deal throughout time obviously, because we do know that eventually Dr. Lecter will become Will Graham’s most notorious enemy.  One thing you can count on is for certain; Hannibal Lecter is reliably evil, and in Hannibal he will deliver.

The Scoop:  I love these hot new shows that start up very conveniently just as many of the fall season television programs have had their season finale.  (Pay attention you Walking Dead Fans!)  With thirteen full episodes coming, all you horror/mystery fans out there have plenty to look forward to.  What could be scarier than someone who is arguably almost like the devil in disguise?

The Stars:  British actor Hugh Dancy is set to play the part of Will Graham.  Although clearly having the big shoes of Anthony Hopkins to try and fill, Mads Mikkelsen will play the role of Hannibal.  Mads has already played the parts of some pretty evil bad boys, including the James Bond villain Le Chiffre in Casino Royale.  For this role, Mads has stated that he tried not to equate Hannibal with any mental illness, but literally tried to envision what it would be like to be Satan.  Whoa, now that’s really, really bad.  Let’s see how he delivers!  Martin Fishbourne also makes his return to television in the role of Jack Crawford, the FBI’s head of Behavioral Sciences.  Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully-X-files) will also have a recurring role in Hannibal.  She will be playing the part of Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier, who is Hannibal Lecter’s therapist.  Things are definitely getting interesting!

“A census taker once tried to test me.  I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.”

Here’s a peek at the Hannibal trailer in case you missed the first episode. Hannibal airs Thursday nights on NBC.  Don’t miss it!

Zombies Revisited: Warm Bodies

Warm Bodies in Theaters Feb 1st.

I will admit it. I have become completely addicted to “The Walking Dead.”  It seems that I am not alone when it comes to being fascinated with the whole Zombie apocalypse thing.  I am not normally a fan of over-the-top gore, so it’s kinda weird for me to really like a show that can at times be pretty darn violent.  What is it about these shuffling, hideous, gory, brains hungry as well as brain-dead beings that many of us are really digging these days?  On the surface, it’s hard to understand why we are so drawn to something that really is so insanely disgusting, but there is no doubt.  The Zombie appears to be America’s Next Top Monster.  When it comes to bloodthirsty behemoths, the top spot for a long time has been held emphatically by the charming, sexy, and at times, sensitive Vampire.  (Thank you, Twilight!) Now it seems the suave bloodsucker’s popularity has been taken over by a growling, unyieldingly and ravenous beast.

It was probably only a matter of time before somebody tried to give the Zombie some sensitivity training.  With the latest Zombie movie, “Warm Bodies” soon to be released, the Zombie seems to have gotten a bit of an extreme makeover.  The Zombies we’ve seen in the movies and on television in shows like “The Walking Dead” are brilliantly heinous.  The makeup folks on these shows have done their due diligence, creating for viewers Zombies that are almost painful to look at.  We are simply horrified and completely grossed out at the same time–but somehow we love it just the same.   “Warm Bodies” does have plenty of disgusting walking corpses stumbling their way around, along with the ultra far-gone Zombies (Bony’s) that have relinquished to their plight of ultimate Zombie-ism.  But there is a big twist to this Zombie tale.

So what did “Warm Bodies” introduce to the whole Zombie picture?  Well, in true “Twilight” fashion, “Warm Bodies” has thrown a bit of a monkey wrench into the Zombie persona by introducing some old-fashioned young love into the picture.  By adding a little “boy-meets-girl” chemistry along with a heavy dosing of warm fuzzy’s, “R”, the “Warm Bodies” protagonist, begins to change from his Zombie self.  The Zombies around him begin to change as well.  What’s love got to do with it?  Well, in “Warm Bodies” you might be able to pinpoint it as a catalyst for change.  Are the Zombies becoming human again?  After “R” becomes involved with the girlfriend of one of his former victims, this is exactly what begins to happen.  Instead of eating her, “R” is suddenly very conflicted and tries to connect with her instead.  The effect that this connection has on him becomes contagious, creating a big reversal as to what we typically associate with old school Zombies.  What’s great about the concept?  These Zombies don’t have to have their heads bashed in order to save the human race.  Maybe there’s enough humanity left in them to save them from themselves.  Stay tuned!  “Warm Bodies” opens in theatres on February 1st and you will not want to miss it.

Jersey Shore Mania!

Jersey Shore Cast

Jersey Shore Cast

Wow I can’t believe how big Jersey Shore has become!  It’s like watching a train wreck, you don’t want to but you just can’t help yourself.  MTV really hit the big time with this little reality series about a group of twenty-something year olds living together and partying it up (GTL – gym, tan, laundry) for the summer in Seaside Heights, NJ.  Can you believe season one premiered in December 2009 to 1.37 million viewers and season 3 premiered in January 2011 with record ratings of 8.45 million viewers!  It’s so popular that the cast of Jersey Shore made Barbara Walter’s “10 Most Fascinating People” list!

Because it’s such a huge hit with high school and religiously watched by college students, it’s no surprise that the stars of Jersey Shore were popular Halloween costumes last year.  Snooki was the most popular by far!  It’s an easy costume – lots of poof in the hair, lots of bronzer and a short skirt and you’re ready to go!  Pauly D was also fun to portray with tons of hair gel and Ed Hardy t-shirt and jeans and you’ve got the look.  You couldn’t have made up a better cast of characters for all the college students to dress up as for Halloween.

Season one and three were filmed at the Jersey Shore and season two was filmed in Miami, Florida.   But wait, there’s still another season to come with the group heading to Italy for season four.  Now that should be interesting!  I don’t think we’ve heard the last of Snooki, JWoww, Sammi, Pauly D, the Situation, Ronnie and Vinny!

Costumes Are Fun On A Winter Day!

Yo Gabba Gabba Costumes

This winter has been especially rough with all the snowfall – not just inches in some states, but it’s coming down in feet!  With all that snowfall and freezing temperatures, playing outside isn’t always an option for a lot of kids.  So with that in mind, parents should be prepared to hear the famous child cry of, “I’m bored!”

One simple way to keep kids busy for hours can be summed up in one simple word…costumes! Kids love them!  Some of our children’s favorite shows are on Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel.  There’s nothing better for a child than to be able to dress up as one of their favorite characters.

Besides the superheroes and princesses, children will love the Yo Gabba Gabba costumesand the Sponge Bob costumes!  Encouraging your child to use his or her imagination and letting their creative juices flow is a great way for them to have hours of fun when they’re stuck inside on a wintery day!
