Snow White – Why We Can’t Seem To Get Enough of Her

“Snow White and the Huntsman” came roaring into theatres this past weekend.  This somewhat modernized version of the epic story of Snow White is yet another adaptation of this legendary fairy tale from long ago.  What is it about Snow White and her crazy life that apparently has stood the test of time?  Why do we care anymore about these ancient fairy stories?  Do they even relate to our modern day living?  Here’s our list of the top 5 reasons why we still love Snow White:

Snow White is the Eternal Optimist.  There’s nothing worse than hanging out with someone who is always moaning and groaning about everything; but you won’t see any of that nonsense with this girl.  Even during some of the direst circumstances, good ol’ Snow is keeping her chin up and her attitude positive.  That’s impressive.  Snow White continues to look forward to a brighter day and of course, is hope driven by her desire to find true love.

Snow White is Always Cheerful. Okay, perhaps it might get mildly annoying at times to be around someone this happy, but there is something to be said for someone who can keep smiling when their life is absolutely exploding.  During the most tedious and mundane chores, Snow White found the wherewithal to sing catchy little tunes about whistling while you work.  (It’s in your head now, isn’t it?)  If attitude is everything, Snow White wins, hands down.

Snow White is Humble.  Even though Snow White technically is royalty, she seems to be completely fine with the fact that she was forced to wear ratty clothes and work like a slave. (She did however, still look smokin’ hot in her ragged duds–take that, you evil Stepmother!) When the dwarves find Snow White deep in the forest, she doesn’t find cleaning up after the little guys beneath her either; she just dives right in and gets the job done.  No diva attitude for Snow White, princess or not, she behaves like a pretty average, hardworking girl.

Snow White is Kind.  They say you catch a lot more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.  Snow White truly must use this philosophy as her mantra, and in the fairytale we know and love, this quality of hers likely saved her life on more than one occasion. The Huntsman, who leaves her in the forest, was likely so taken with her beauty and sweetness that he couldn’t follow through with the evil bidding of the queen.  When they happen upon Snow White, the seven dwarves are also very taken by her completely sweet demeanor and instantly all are enamored with her as well, swearing to take care of her at all costs.

Snow White doesn’t Give Up.  Let’s face it.  Snow White came up against some pretty fierce obstacles, from attempts on her life, to having to survive after being ditched in the middle of forest-nowhere.  Snow White teaches us that it really doesn’t matter how many times you get knocked down in life, the important part is getting back up, brushing yourself off and persevering until eventually things turn around for you.  You gotta hand it to this chick.  For someone who seems so docile, sweet and innocent, she’s really got some bravado. For the latest metamorphosis on her character check out “Snow White and The Huntsman.”  In theatres now.

5 Facts You Need to Know About Memorial Day

Memorial Day is the official kick off to summer and is something we all look forward to.  Memorial day is part of a delicious 3-day weekend, traditionally filled with family fun, picnics and barbeques, or maybe even a trip to the beach.  It’s definitely time to fill up those swimming pools, pull out the summer wardrobe and dust off the patio furniture, but there really is a whole lot more to Memorial Day than just 3 fun-filled days. Here’s our top 5 list of facts that you really should know about this holiday that besides being lots of fun, should also be filled with both honor and reverence.

  1. Memorial Day started right after the Civil War.  The origins of this holiday go way back.  May 30, 1868 was designated to be what was at first called “Decoration Day”.  This event was designed especially to honor the memory of the many, many fallen soldiers of both the Union and the Confederacy, while also giving survivors an opportunity to decorate the graves of these brave soldiers.  General James Garfield gave a speech at Arlington National Cemetery after which the graves of more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers were then decorated.
  2. “Decoration Day” was declared a time of remembrance and became a time for the nation to remember the war dead and to decorate the graves of these fallen soldiers.  Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30.  This day was chosen largely because of the profusion of flowers that would be in bloom at this time of the year.
  3. Red Poppies became associated with Memorial Day in about 1915.  A woman named Moina Michael was so inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields” that she composed a poem of her own:
  4. “We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.”

Moina came up with the idea to wear red poppies on Memorial Day as a way of honoring those that died serving their country, a tradition that still continues to this day.

  5. Traditional Memorial Day observance states that flags should be flown at half-mast until noon.  At mid-day it is then appropriate to raise the flag to the top of the mast.
  6. Memorial Day is as much about the survivors as it is about the deceased.  It’s the survivors that can make sure that the memory of our fallen soldiers lives on and that the stories of their ultimate bravery are told.  Survivors can continue to tell the tales of our war heroes and perpetuate the ideals that they believed in and ultimately gave their lives for.

Have a safe and wonderful Memorial Day!

Donna Summer: Goodbye to Disco’s Queen

Donna Summer, known affectionately as the Queen of Disco passed away this week but not without leaving behind a legacy filled with pulsating beats and catchy dance tunes.  Donna always felt her true roots were in the heart of Rock ‘n’ Roll and was uncomfortable and somewhat reluctant to wear the royal title as the Queen of Disco.   The decade of the seventies was defined, however, by the music of Donna Summer. Even when disco crashed and burned at the end of the dance-beat driven decade (the 70′s disco costumes continue to be a hit however), this woman still continued to reinvent herself.

By far the most controversial song ever recorded by Donna Summer was the infamous and ultra sultry “Love To Love You Baby.”  The over the top sexual tapestry that is woven in the half-sung, half-moaned song came to fruition in a decade that was filled with completely new rules regarding sex, race, fashions and even drugs.  This sexually charged song was considered so racy at the time that it required significant editing for radio play.

Donna Summer had many big disco hits to her name including other favorites such as the likes of “I Feel Love” and “Last Dance”.  Even when the glory days of disco were beginning to fade away, Donna still cranked out some of her biggest hits such as “She Works Hard For the Money”, a women’s anthem that burned up the charts in the early 1980’s.

Donna had many other lesser-known successes in her career, including being a successful writer in the country music genre.  Co-written by Donna and her husband, Bruce Sudano, “Starting Over Again” became a #1 hit for Dolly Parton in 1980 and once again hit the top 20 for Reba McIntyre in 1995.   Although Donna herself never recorded “Starting Over Again”, she has described having someone else record her song as “a life-changing experience”.

Donna Summer’s career, her life, and her legacy–all have left her fans feeling their lives changed forever as well. You can’t have lived through the seventies without carrying one of her smoldering melodies with you.  This Disco Queen will indeed forever reign.

The Avengers: Random Facts You Might Need to Know

Last weekend, “The Avengers” hit theatres and easily took over the #1 box office spot by a landslide, grossing over $207,000,000 buckaroonies in one weekend.  Just in case you have been living under a rock and need to brush up on some of The Avengers basic factoids, here are a few random facts about this fabulous, action packed film, just so you won’t embarrass yourself.

  • The Avengers is based on the Marvel comic, which was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
  • The first Avengers comic was published way back in 1963.  The original superhero line up featured in the comic included: Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Ant Man and Wasp.  Captain America came along to join the team in issue #4, after being revived from being trapped inside a large block of ice.
  • In the very first issue of the original The Avengers, it was Loki, the brother of Thor, who was being extremely problematic.  The Avengers then assembled themselves in order to deal with Loki and try to successfully defeat him.
  • The Avengers movie sticks to the original themes and most of the cast members found in the first issues of the Marvel comic book.  Spider-man (rights owned by Sony) and Wolverine (rights owned by 20th Century Fox) were left out of the film.  Spider-man will be getting his own movie, however, later this summer. “The Amazing Spider-Man” is due to be released over the Fourth of July Weekend.
  • In order to play the part of the Hulk, Mark Ruffalo needed to lose 21 pounds (no wonder the Avengers costumes are so amazing).  In the Avengers, the Hulk stays in his fierce, huge (and green) state all the time.  This means all 8 ½ feet of him, no matter how pissed off he is.
  • Scarlett Johansson had to train heavily in the art of Wushu and other serious weaponry in order to prepare for her reprised role of the Black Widow.  Scarlett was thrilled to play the much fan-appreciated role, which had originated for her back in Iron Man II.
  • The infamous battle cry of The Avengers comic book is “Avengers, Assemble!”  Apparently during filming, Chris Evans (Captain America) would text his fellow cast mates with this battle cry included in the message in order to assemble them for a hot night and much needed break out on the town.
  • It’s predicted that The Avengers, in all its beloved caped glory, will eventually surpass the one billion dollar mark in ticket sales.  Don’t be left out in the cold.  With all the hoopla this movie is creating, this is one superhero flick you won’t want to miss.
