Rain, Rain, Go Away!

April ShowersWe have all heard the children’s verse that goes like this, “April showers bring May flowers.” Hey, I want flowers and green things blooming in the springtime just like everyone else does, but sometimes, day after day of rain can make the kids start to bounce off the walls a little! When the kids are dying to get outside, but Mother Nature has other plans, (like conjuring up spring flowers, of course) here are some great ideas to keep the kids from going completely stir crazy!

Get Out And Get In it!  We’ve all heard the saying, “When you can’t beat them, join them!”  Well, the same goes for rain.  If you’ve got the proper gear, a little rain can be fun for kids to play in. (Big kids, too!) Put on slickers, galoshes, grab an umbrella and head out to do a little good time puddle jumping!  Need a hands-free headgear alternative?  A super silly, but uber rain-friendly umbrella hat is a fun option for anyone who wants to play in the rain but still leave their hands free to do other stuff.  Plus, this hat is just plain silly which adds to the fun of playing in the rain.

Make A Production Out Of It!  Haul out those old Halloween costumes and accessories from last year and put your kids to work on some fun at-home theatrics.  They can create and act out a play or homemade production of their own design.  When they put their minds to it, you would be amazed at how creative, dramatic, humorous and innovative kids can be.  This activity will also potentially keep them busy for hours!  Your kids can invite the other kids in the neighborhood to see the finished show when it’s ready for opening.  Younger kids will have fun just “dressing up” in the old costumes and getting into various characters by acting them out.

You Can Do Magic!  Teach your kids some simple card tricks or other easy to learn magic.  Kids are absolutely fascinated by anything to do with magic.  Learning the behind the scenes magician’s secrets is something they will really get into while at the same time they will be amazing, astonishing and impressing their friends. Simple magic tricks or illusions are really quite easy to learn.  When your kids have enough tricks up their sleeve for a whole magic show you can gear them up with a magician’s costume and other cool magic accessories that will add some professional polish to their magic act.

Search Fer Ye Pirate Booty!  Kids love to play and pretend anything that has to do with pirates.  It’s fun to get into pirate costumes and even more fun to try out a little of the pirate lingo in their playtime conversation.  Hide some pirate treasure (play coins, play jewelry) etc. around the house for your kids to find.  If you are really into this, you can even create a pirate’s treasure map to guide them straight to the loot!  They will have a blast trying to figure the pirate mystery out!

Bring The Sunshine IN!  Who says you can’t bring a little island flavor indoors on a rainy day?  Plan to have an indoor Hawaiian luau, right smack in your living room.  Decorate your space with palm tree cutouts and other island themed décor.  Dress for your luau in leis, grass skirtsand Hawaiian shirts.  Rain?  What rain?  You and your kids will feel like you are on a tropical vacation! (Well, almost…)

Rainy days don’t have to spell disaster, nor do they need to put a damper on your children’s good times. With a little bit of imagination and creativity, a rainy day could very easily be your best day!

Tax Day: It’s Just So Darn Taxing!

It's Tax Time!

April 15th, the most dreaded deadline of all deadlines.  It’s a day probably only accountants or H&R Block can love.  Tax Day is sometimes (okay, almost always) filled with anxiety, stress and financial pressure.  Have you filed your tax return yet?  Are you freaking out?  If any of these feelings are with you, trust me, you are not alone.  Tax Day is no picnic for any of us.  If you are one of the luckier ones, your problems may be as simple as asking the question, “How much is my refund going to be?”  If you are not so lucky, you may be experiencing a bad case of the “OH NO! OH NO! I OWE!” syndrome. In this case, it may be time for some deep breathing and meditation.  You will get through this.

If you are having serious issues with your taxes or tax-related stresses, sorry I probably can’t help you.  This is a costume blog, not a financial blog.  That said, you may enjoy a few of our tax day survival suggestions that may make getting through these trying times just a smidge easier.  A sense of humor never hurt anyone.

Counting Down:  There is an actual Tax Day Countdown clock.  If you need to have a little extra pressure put on you in order to make you do things (uh, say for example, your taxes), you might find this Tax Day Countdown Clock helpful.

I actually found this clock rather annoying as it gave me ten times more tax related anxiety simply by just watching this baby count down, but that’s just me.

Freebies:  The bright side of Tax Day is that there are a lot of retailers and restaurants out there that are actually taking pity on the taxpayers of America and offering up some pretty nifty (and in some cases, tasty) freebies.  Here are some of them and we’re betting you will find even more in your own local neighborhood!

  • Arby’s:  Free curly fries or potato cakes at participating Arby’s restaurants on April 15.
  • Boston Market:  Get 2 rib meals for just $10.40 (get it?) on tax day.
  • Cinnabon:  Get 2 free Cinnabon Bites on April 15, while supplies last.
  • Sonic:  Drinks and slushes for 50% off at participating restaurants on April 15th.  Go ahead–drown your sorrows!

Manage Your Stress:  Still feeling stressed out?  Try taking a walk or get outside for a while. Sometimes the simple act of walking away from your pile of forms, documents and receipts and taking a short break will make you feel better.

Uncle Sam Wants YOU!  Yes, he does want your money, but he also wants you to have some fun.  What could be a better way to get even with the big guy than by putting together an IRS-themed costume party or get together?  Paying Uncle Sam isn’t fun, but dressing up as him IS.  Be sure to check out our how-to video for easy step-by-step instructions on how to put together your own fun Uncle Sam look.

Need some other super fun costume ideas to help you celebrate April 15th?

  • You’re Fired Wig!  Dressing up as Donald Trump is super easy when you have his signature “do”. He may have actually had to pay more taxes than you! (You’re Fired Wig)
  • Gold Digger:  Hey, it might a solution for next year? (Gold Digger Costume)
  • Robin Hood: You have to have some degree of respect for someone who steals from the rich and gives money to the poor.  (And who isn’t feeling the pinch a little right now?) (Robin Hood)
  • Hundred Dollar Bill:  If you don’t have one, why not just “be” one?  It might offer a small bit of tax day solace. (Hundred Dollar Bill Costume)
  • Lady Luck:  Perhaps we all could use a little of this right now. (Lady Luck)
  • Dress as your Accountant (Nerd costume):  This get up probably doesn’t look exactly like your financial planner but it bears a shocking resemblance to mine, so I am throwing it in. (Financial Planner Costume)

April 15th needn’t be the worst day of the year.  Perhaps it will even surprise you with an unexpectedly large refund coming your way.  In any case, breathe and stay calm.  It’s all going to be all right.

“Isn’t it appropriate that the month of the tax begins with April Fool’s Day and ends with cries of ‘May Day!’?”– Robert Knauerhase

Horrible Hannibal

Horribal Hannibal

Around these parts, it’s kinda hard to find a monster that really stands up and gets our attention.  We’ve seen them all.  Yes, through the years we’ve seen some pretty gnarly characters that have been unbelievably scary.  There is one guy, however, who likely has sent more than one utterly ice-cold shiver down your spine.  His name is Hannibal Lecter.  This past week on NBC, Hannibal Lecter returned to the screen to thrill and terrify audiences once again, this time in a new television series entitled Hannibal.  Made by Brian Fuller, Hannibal takes the audience back to the early days when Dr. Hannibal Lecter was still a practicing psychiatrist and was working with FBI agent Will Graham, tracking serial killers.   The relationship will evolve a great deal throughout time obviously, because we do know that eventually Dr. Lecter will become Will Graham’s most notorious enemy.  One thing you can count on is for certain; Hannibal Lecter is reliably evil, and in Hannibal he will deliver.

The Scoop:  I love these hot new shows that start up very conveniently just as many of the fall season television programs have had their season finale.  (Pay attention you Walking Dead Fans!)  With thirteen full episodes coming, all you horror/mystery fans out there have plenty to look forward to.  What could be scarier than someone who is arguably almost like the devil in disguise?

The Stars:  British actor Hugh Dancy is set to play the part of Will Graham.  Although clearly having the big shoes of Anthony Hopkins to try and fill, Mads Mikkelsen will play the role of Hannibal.  Mads has already played the parts of some pretty evil bad boys, including the James Bond villain Le Chiffre in Casino Royale.  For this role, Mads has stated that he tried not to equate Hannibal with any mental illness, but literally tried to envision what it would be like to be Satan.  Whoa, now that’s really, really bad.  Let’s see how he delivers!  Martin Fishbourne also makes his return to television in the role of Jack Crawford, the FBI’s head of Behavioral Sciences.  Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully-X-files) will also have a recurring role in Hannibal.  She will be playing the part of Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier, who is Hannibal Lecter’s therapist.  Things are definitely getting interesting!

“A census taker once tried to test me.  I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.”

Here’s a peek at the Hannibal trailer in case you missed the first episode. Hannibal airs Thursday nights on NBC.  Don’t miss it!

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

Baseball is Here!

We’ve been thinking about it, and there’s a good chance that you have been, too.  The fantastic, illustrious, exciting game of great American baseball!!  What is arguably the best All-American sport ever had its official opening day on Easter Sunday, which can mean only one thing folks; we are now in baseball season- full swing!  (Pun intended.)  Here’s why there’s plenty to get excited about this baseball season.

Games-a-plenty:  What other sport out there will offer its fans something like 162 games in one season?  If, when it comes to baseball, enough is never enough, then you oughta be one happy sports fan.

Food and Beverages:  At a baseball game, beer just tastes better, ask anyone.  You’ve got to try the nachos, the wings and of course, peanuts and crackerjacks are almost mandatory.  And then there are the Hot Dogs. (Can you hear angels singing?)  We think Humphrey Bogart said it best.  “A Hot Dog at a ballpark is better than a steak at the Ritz”.  We concur.

Good Ol’ Rivalry’s:  Baseball fans are extremely loyal to their teams and also will hold long-standing grudges against their team’s most diabolical rivals, even if the home team continues to lose.  Holding fast and loyal to your beloved team is part of the baseball fan mentality.

Smarter Than An Umpire:  Aren’t we all?  It’s amazing how a loyal baseball fan has crystal clear vision and simply sees things that apparently the umps do not.  A loyal baseball fan is not the least bit afraid to inform the umpire when he has made another mistake.

No Rule Book Necessary:  One of the best reasons to love baseball is how completely fan-friendly and basically uncomplicated it is to understand.  The most green of novices will be able to comprehend the basics of baseball and will get it enough to easily enjoy the game.

Amazing Souvenirs:  How many times have you gone to a football or basketball game and come home with the game ball or even had the possibility of obtaining one?  Baseball does offer the unique opportunity to retrieve the ball that was likely used to hit the most epic of hits of this beloved game–the home run.

Best Fans Ever:  Baseball fans are indeed loyal to a fault. We’ve all heard of baseball lovers whose team hasn’t won anything; but somehow the fans remain undeterred and love their team nonetheless.  They love them through the losing.  They love them even more when they are winning!  No cheerleaders are ever necessary–a die-hard baseball fan knows how to cheer for his team, even when they are down.

All The Time In The World:  A baseball game lasts until the very last inning is over and is not ever dictated by a clock.  With no time constraints placed on it, a baseball game often has a much more relaxed environment because of it.  Baseball ends when baseball ends.  Plus, there’s always plenty of time for more snacks!

Legendary Ballparks:  Many baseball parks are almost bigger than life and parts of American history.  There is nothing like a game in a place like Fenway Park or Wrigley Field to get a baseball fan’s heart pumping.

From that first pitch thrown out in early spring to the playoff games that hit sometime in October, baseball will truly always be one of America’s greatest pastimes.

“Playing baseball is not real life.  It’s a fantasy world.  It’s a dream come true.”
Dale Murphy
