I Didn’t Know Yoda Could Snowboard!

Wow was it just me or was the first week in January crazy with snow and freezing temperatures?  I don’t think any state was left out of “below normal” temperatures.

Here in the northern part of Kentucky, for the first time since the New Year rang in we finally got our temperatures above the freezing mark!  Talk about being bitter cold and let’s not forget about the snow.  Although I do have to say we didn’t get hit near as hard as some of the northern and eastern states – so for that I’m happy!

Of course my kids are estatic about the snow.  Where there’s snow there’s snow days off school and for that they are eternally grateful!  My son Caden has decided to take up snowboarding and is having a blast.  Even though he has moved onto the big leagues snowboarding at a ski area over in Indiana, he still likes to take to the hills in our backyard with his friends.  Speaking of his friends, last year for Halloween they all went as different Star Wars characters to their school dance.  Their costumes were great!  There was five of them dressed as Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, a Clone Trooper, Yoda and they just couldn’t leave out Chewbacca.  The Star Wars costumes were a huge hit!  So needless to say I thought it was hysterical when I looked out my back window just in time to see Darth Vader flying down the hill with Chewbacca right behind him!

I couldn’t stop laughing!  The whole neighborhood got a kick out of it!

Here We Go Again!

Well, here we go again with another year of adult costumes, kids costumes, teen costumes, tween costumes, pet costumes…well you get the picture!  2010 will be fun and exciting with great accessories and decorations to make every holiday, party and family get together one to remember.

I was filling out my calendar and checking out all the big and small holidays that are coming up in February; Valentine’s Day, Groundhog Day, Presidents’ Day and George Washington’s birthday.  Now those are some great holidays for costumes!

Presidents’ Day costumes and masks are a big hit in February.   Ask your history teacher if you can put on a play displaying your school’s patriotic side.  HalloweenExpress.com has everything you need to make a really cool shout out to America’s history from the years of former President George Washington to present day President Barack Obama.

Christmas Costumes

Christmas TreeWell, are you ready for Christmas yet?  Isn’t it just a blast running around the weekend before Christmas fighting all the traffic and the mobs of people in the malls doing the same thing you are – the dreaded last minute shopping!  We’ve all been there.  Some even consider it a tradition to go shopping on Christmas Eve.  Not me!  Our Christmas Eve is spent with all my family coming over eating great food, watching football, playing board games and just enjoying each others company.  Now that’s not to say I’m not out the day before Christmas Eve trying to finish my last minute shopping “to do” list!

As you all know I love shopping online and HalloweenExpress.com was a huge help this year.  Their kids costumes are amazing and it was so easy to find the perfect costume for each of my kids.  Every year we get them a costume as one of their Christmas gifts.  They love it!  They spend more time on the website in the weeks before Christmas just looking for costumes to put on their Santa lists.

Santa SuitBy the way, did you get your Santa suit this year?  They’re wonderful!  No more rushing around waiting in line for hours for your kids to see Santa Claus.  Your kids can have fun with Santa without all the hustle and bustle.

Even with the ease of online ordering I’m still one to procrastinate on other presents!  So I’ll be right out there with some of you this weekend trying to find a parking space at the mall just to catch some of those last minute shopping deals all the stores have been harping about.

Happy Shopping!

Don’t Forget Your Christmas Crackers!

I’d like to talk to you about an age old tradition in England that has recently become increasingly popular in the states.  You’re probably thinking, “Ok, I have more than enough traditions to last throughout my Christmas holiday”, but this one is so easy and fun that everyone, no matter what their age, will love it!

The tradition is simply called “The Christmas Crackers”.

Tom Smith Christmas Crackers

You’re probably asking, “What the heck is a Christmas Cracker?”  Well, first of all it’s not food!  The Christmas cracker was invented in 1847 by Tom Smith, a baker of wedding cakes from Clerkenwell, London.  On a trip to Paris in 1840 Smith discovered the “bon-bon”, a sugared almond wrapped in a twist of paper. Back in London, his new sweets became quite popular.  In 1846, while standing at his fireplace, the crackle of a log gave him the flash of inspiration for the cracker.  He pasted small strips of saltpetre to two strips of thin card. As the cards were pulled away from each other, the friction created a crack and a spark (similar to that used in a cap gun).  A cracker consists of a cardboard tube wrapped in a brightly decorated twist of paper, making it resemble an over-sized sweet-wrapper. The cracker is pulled by two people and, much in the manner of a wishbone, the cracker splits unevenly. The split is accompanied by a small bang.  Inside the cracker is typically a bright paper hat, a small gift, a balloon and a motto or joke.

Last year we had the Tom Smith Christmas Crackers on Christmas Eve and the kids couldn’t wait to “pull” their crackers.  Even the adults were getting into it!  Believe me you’ll love these crackers because they make one heck of an exciting Christmas treat!

Children's Christmas CrackersTom Smith Christmas Crackers come in different varieties and you’ll find them all at HalloweenExpress.com.   Along with the Traditional Crackers they have a line of Children’s Christmas Crackers for the younger kids made up of Disney Princesses, Disney Classic Movies, Winnie the Pooh, and other fun designs.  The kids love these! Then they have the Luxury Crackers that are beautifully wrapped in gorgeous silver, gold or cream foil that are perfect for your holiday party.  Make Tom Smith Christmas Crackers part of your holiday traditions!  You’ll be glad you did!
