Talk Like A Pirate Day is Here!

Talk Like a Pirate Day!Aye Mateys! It’s time to talk a wee bit about Sea dogs.   We mean Pirates of course.  In case you hadn’t heard, these seafarin’ hearties have their own official holiday now.  And TODAY is it! Yup, today Monday, September 19 is officially “Talk Like A Pirate Day.”  Now, ye might be sayin’, “Why on earth would I be needin’ t’ talk like a Swashbuckler?”  Well, you only need one reason, really—because it’s fun.  We have lots of ideas to help you celebrate this holiday properly and to make sure that you enjoy this day in its proper fashion, with all things Pirate.  Here’s our complete list of things to make your “Talk Like a Pirate Day” absolutely fit for the high sea.

Know the Story- Not so ancient legend has it that the tale went something like this.  Two guys named John Baur and Mark Summers were playing a rousing game of raquetball one day when suddenly one of the two men got a mild injury.  “Arrrrr,” he groaned.  And in that moment, a holiday was born.  The men were so amused by the pirate-like expression that came out under duress, that they immediately changed their names to “Old Chumbucket” and “Cap’n Slappy.”  The two friends, enthralled with their swashbuckling exchanges that day, decided an official holiday was in order and thereby designated September 19, “Talk Like A Pirate” day. Learn the Lingo-Obviously, if you are going to have any fun at all on Talk Like A Pirate Day, you are going to need to know some basic pirate-speak.  Here are some of the essentials to get you started.

Shiver me timbers! (What a surprise!)
Me Hearties! (Friends)
Blimey (Wow)
Landlubber (A person who prefers life on land; a definite pirate insult)
Aye (Yes!)
Ahoy! (Hello!)
Davy Jones Locker (The bottom of the sea)

Lucky for all us folks who aren’t quite fluent in Pirate (yet), there are lots of handy English to Pirate translators available online.  This can be particularly fun to use for your emails to co-workers or friends on this special day.  Have fun with it and think of this as an educational experience in exploring a new language.

Dress Like a Pirate-Alright me fine mateys!  Now we need to address the important stuff.  If you are going to go around talking like a Pirate, it’s much more effective if you are dressed like one, too.  Today would be a great time to obtain and wear an authentic looking Pirate costume.  These are easily available for men, women and children and will definitely add an air of authenticity to your Pirate celebration.  That, and make sure you have a nice growling “Arrrrr.”

Get Great Accessories-To be a proper buccaneer you are going to need appropriate accessories to complete your Pirate look.  Head wraps, eye patches, earrings, hand hooks, swords, boots, hats and a bunch of gold doubloons will give you realistic Pirate flair.  You might even want to consider getting the old stand by first mate to the Cap’n of the Pirate ship, a colorful stuffed parrot designed to sit on your shoulder.  The right accessories are essential to create the perfect Pirate ensemble.

Get an Attitude-Decide what kind of Pirate you want to be and adopt the right swagger.  Pirates aren’t really known for their sweet gentility, so feel free to be a little growly and brusque, it’s the Pirate way.  Make sure you have a really great Pirate name for this special holiday, too.  Black Bart, Satan’s Doom or Neptune will create an air of authenticity about you as you wear your Pirate look.  A good Pirate name is a must; not too many Pirates were called Brad or Susan.

Enjoy Pirate Media-Talk Like a Pirate Day is the perfect day to haul out your favorite Pirate flicks and watch them again as part of your homage to Pirates.  Treasure Island and any of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies are a great place to start.  Don’t forget to invite your crew of Bucko’s over and make a Pirate movie night of it.

Enjoy Pirate Fare-When you think of Pirates and their eating habits, you are probably thinking of a filthy, drooling and beastly old sea dog eating a giant drumstick with one hand, a knife in the other and eating mostly with his fingers.  Pirates certainly weren’t known for their manners, and usually everything was washed down with a good dousing of Rum.  This is your perfect opportunity to eat your grub as messy as you like.  And of course, you can substitute more subdued Pirate beverages such as Pineapple or Coconut juice for the Rum if you prefer.  If a little of your brew dribbles down your chin, its all the better.

Enjoy Music like a Pirate-Sing it raucous, sing it loud and sing it very off pitch.  If you are going to really sound like a Pirate you have to be a bit gauche.  “We pillage, we plunder we rifle and loot, drink up me hearties yo ho!  We kidnap and ravage and don’t give a hoot, drink up me hearties yo ho!”  That’ll get you started, but don’t try to make a career out of this Pirate singing gig, you may quickly lose your crew.

Get Into It-There are a surprising number of fun resources available for Talk Like a Pirate Day that are going to make it really fun and easy to get into it.  Google is on board and has a Google Pirate Search engine that you may want to try.  Your Facebook page can be translated into Pirate language as well.  There are many apps available to enhance your experience as a swashbuckler so have fun with them!

Pay your Pirate Forward-Sadly, all good things must come to an end, and Talk Like a Pirate Day lasts only for one day.  Any efforts to continue on in Pirate mode beyond this probably aren’t going to go over very well, so this isn’t recommended.  Even still, you can probably find other uses for your Pirate look down the line, the very soonest being on Halloween!  A Pirate look makes a fantastic Halloween costume!

Have a lot of fun on Talk Like a Pirate Day.  Makin’ conversation like a slimy ol’ bilge rat is going to give you plenty to Yo ho ho about.

Haunted Decorating Ideas

As mid-September approaches, you’ve probably already packed away your pool toys and summer inflatables for the cooler months and are now getting geared up for the crisper fall weather.  The days are growing shorter and by now your kids have probably gotten into a back to school groove.  The back to school rush is over and now that kids all have their school supplies, the stores are already filled up with fall merchandise, much of it surrounding Halloween.

You may have been contemplating some fall and Halloween style decorations for your home and for your yard as well, and believe it or not, it’s not too soon to start putting them out now as the cool crisp days of fall are nearly upon us.

One of the newest trends in Halloween decorations that will create both a dramatic as well as festive flair to any yard or garden is that of inflatable yard art.  At night when the decoration is inflated and illuminated, the figure literally comes to life with nearly animated features that create an exciting effect with a very huge impact.  These are decorations that cannot be ignored and create a lot of bang for your buck.

Another very versatile prop to own is that of a completely posable dummy.  The generic dummy form can be dressed in any costume that you like and can be changed from year to year for versatility and to go along with the theme of your other decorations.  Make sure your porch has a dressed for Halloween personage there both to scare as well as watch over all of the festivities.

A really fun idea for your yard at Halloween is to recreate the scene of a graveyard.  Complete with disinterred spooks, some ground breaking skeletons and a few tombstones your yard can be transformed into a frightful scene that is sure to scare a few trick or treaters.  While you are at it, be sure to add a few animated props to your eerie Halloween scene.   Props that move, talk ghoulishy or jump out at appropriate times are always tried and true favorites for good ol’ Halloween scares.

Halloween is the second most popular holiday for home and yard decorating, so you won’t want to wait to pick out your favorite selections.  Get what you want now because just like most Halloween spooks, after a while this stuff will simply cease to exist. With the right decorations and props your Halloween is going to be absolutely spook-tacular!

The Costume Box

At our house it was always called the costume box.  It was actually this really large chest that all of our old Halloween costumes and accessories found their way into year after year when Halloween was over.  No, this wasn’t a storage methodology—it was actually a very well used trunk filled with things we used for dressing up and playtime all year round.  If you have kids, you probably already know this, children’s Halloween costumes are not just for Halloween anymore.
Imaginative playtime, pretend and dress up will always be some of kid’s favorite past times.  Wearing costumes gives kids the opportunity to pretend to be various characters from TV and the movies, as well as to experience adult roles that they may see during daily living.  Believe it or not, playing dress up is a great way for kids to deal with the stresses of every day life, plus it’s a wonderful opportunity to use their growing imaginations.

As the first signs of fall appear, now is a great time to start thinking about some great dress up ideas for your kids, for Halloween of course, but also just for fun and for play.  Some of the summer’s hottest movies have provided great characters that probably have inspired you, such as those from Pirates of the Caribbean, Captain America, Harry Potter and the Green Lantern.

Take full advantage of the many hours of fun that a costume can provide for a child, from animals to many various occupations.  Your child will enjoy recreating many of these exciting roles and having numerous imaginative adventures.

Top 10 Characters for Kids Dress Up

Top 10 Characters for Kids Dress UpWith the unofficial end of summer now behind us, our thoughts naturally turn to autumn and all the simple pleasures that it brings with it.  The kids are back in school and soon will be settled nicely into a more structured routine.  The days are getting shorter and as they go by, the crisp fall air begins to replace the thick heat of summertime.  Soon Halloween will be here, and your kids undoubtedly have noticed the stores filling up with fall merchandise.  Costumes are a must have for Halloween, but kids love to dress up in costumes anytime.  Costumes are great for any imaginative playtime.  Here’s our list of our favorite characters that your kids are going to want to have for their dress up collection.  Of course, they make really great Halloween costumes, too!

Buzz Lightyear-To Infinity and Beyond!  This quirky Space Ranger from the movie series Toy Story is already one of your child’s favorites!  Buzz is notorious for finding himself in a bit of trouble, and after a lot of silly shenanigans always manages to finds his way back out!  Unsure if he is a toy or an actual Space Ranger, Buzz will always be most well known for his bravery and courage.  Your child will have many hours of fun recreating the delightful character of Buzz Lightyear.

Tinkerbell- (or “Tink” for short) is one of the most memorable fairy characters out there.  Fairies are a mythical and magical being that any child will love to dress up as.  They are beautiful, with gossamer wings and dresses that fall from the waist like soft flower petals.  In addition to being strikingly beautiful, Tinkerbell is known for a bit of a tempestuous and jealous streak along with a bit of notorious mischief making.  Little girls love dressing up in pretty dresses.  Recreating the lovely Tinkerbell, along with her cloud of pixie dust will be a sparkling adventure for any little girl.

Captain America-Every child has a favorite superhero, and Captain America could very easily find his way into your child’s heart.  Captain America, arguably one of the most patriotic superheroes, became a superhero after a rough start in life.  Always a weak and frail person, Steve Rogers gained his superhuman strength after being administered a mysterious serum that transformed him into an enhanced being of literal human perfection.  Your child will have hours of fun bringing out his inner superhero and becoming his own version of Captain America!

Policemen- Playing “cops and robbers” is a classic kids imaginative, role-playing game.  There is nothing more fun for a child than donning the uniform of one of the ultimate authority figures in our society, while going out to apprehend the bad guys and haul them off to jail.  Your child will have hours of fun role-playing this significant player in adult life and will have fun exploring this part of the world around him.   Robbers should beware; there is a policeman nearby that is fully prepared to take you into custody!

Dorothy- She’s off to see the wizard!  There is something magical about Dorothy, who is the ultimate damsel in distress.  With her newly bequeathed Ruby slippers as well as her acquired sidekicks, the Scarecrow, the Tin man, and the Cowardly Lion, Dorothy, an ordinary farm girl from Kansas, suddenly finds herself thrust into a strange land, with an evil witch set out to destroy her (and her little dog, too).  Your little girl will love recreating the character of Dorothy during playtime and be thrilled to wear her very own pair of sparkling and magical ruby slippers!

Jack Sparrow- Jack Sparrow is the swashbuckling pirate captain of The Black Pearl.  The swaggering pirate has become a classic character that children truly adore.  Jack is indeed a pirate, but in spite of his dirty, rugged and somewhat disheveled appearance, has confessed that he believes that even some pirates can be honest as well as good men.  Rarely a fighter, Jack would much rather resolve problematic situations with his wits as opposed to weapons or fighting.  Your child will love having many imaginative adventures out on the high seas while pretending to be Jack Sparrow!

Wonder Woman-This outfit represents chick power extraordinaire!  All kids love wrapping a traditional superhero cape around their shoulders and then heading out to save the world.  Girls want to be superheroes, too, and your little girl can be the quintessential female heroine with her own version of a Wonder Woman get up.  With her super human strength, speed and agility, Wonder Woman’s place in the world is to restore order, love, peace and equality.

Spiderman-“Spidey” is a really cool superhero.  Peter Parker at one point was a kind of nerdy kid who was very shy and a bit backwards.  After being inadvertently bitten by a radioactive spider in a laboratory, interesting changes began to occur in Peter and eventually he was transformed into Spiderman!  The once struggling adolescent has now morphed into an agile, super strong being with the ability to cling to most any surface, as well as scale up most any wall.  Web-shooters are now found at his wrists, which enable him to shoot blasts of spider webbing out at will!  Your child is going to love recreating one of the most popular superhero characters of all time!

Super girl-Although somewhat of a more obscure superhero, the chance to be “Super girl” is not one to be missed.  Traditionally, Super girl has the identical superhero powers to Superman and also shares in his vulnerability to Kryptonite.  As Superman’s cousin, Super girl has always been taken under his wing– that is, until she fully learns to use and control her magical powers.  Your child is going to love empowering herself in a Super girl get up.  Traditional colors are available, but make sure to look for the “all pink” version of Super girl for that extra special girl that loves all things in the pink!

Miltary-There is nothing braver than a soldier. Today’s soldiers are stationed in all parts of the world, fighting bravely to preserve our lifestyle as well as our basic freedoms.  Kids love dressing up as the brave men and women that are part of the armed services.  Various takes on camouflage or other military uniforms are the perfect way for your child to dress up to play “army.”  Play-acting a soldier is a great way to use their imagination while recreating pretend battles in your own backyard.

Halloween costumes are obviously great for Halloween, but a costume’s potential as a great playtime accessory should not be overlooked.  With the right dress up gear, your child will have hours and hours of endless imaginative role-playing fun!
